PC Largely Keeps Pace with Highest Scoring Offense in Big South, Drops 2-1 Decision to Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Standing toe-to-toe with the most lethal offensive attack in all of the Big South in their second straight road outing inside league play, the Presbyterian College women's soccer team ran out of time against the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night, striking in the waning seconds of half #1 before taking a 2-1 setback when the dust settled.

Highlighted by the first collegiate score from freshman Lindsey Malyszek with only 36 seconds left until the intermission, PC's last-minute goal completely switched the match's trajectory after GWU drew first blood. In the end, the Runnin' Bulldogs found a second round of ammunition in the 65th minute, scoring multiple goals in the same match for the 12th time this year to outlast the feisty Blue Hose.

FINAL SCORE: Gardner-Webb, 2 – Presbyterian, 1
RECORDS: Presbyterian (0-11-3, 0-5-1 Big South) – Gardner-Webb (9-4-3, 4-1-1 Big South)
LOCATION: Greene-Harbison Stadium (Boiling Springs, N.C.)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
In true form to how the majority of their season has progressed – with a potential top spot in the incoming Big South Tournament within their grasp – Gardner-Webb didn't take long to make their mark on the scoreboard, putting one through the net at the 16:34 stamp to give themselves a 1-0 advantage that seemed would stay until halftime.

That is until Malyszek received a heads-up assist from fellow newbie Abby Ferris with the clock reading 44:24, suddenly evening the odds when the Runnin' Bulldogs were caught with their guard down. Finishing the first period with just one shot less than the league-leader in that category, while holding NCAA goal champion Maddie Turlington without a score for the entire 90 minutes, PC hung right with GWU's vaunted attack until the aforementioned difference-maker 20 minutes into the second frame.

Livi Tanzer and Camila Lezcano were the responsible parties that allowed the Runnin' Bulldogs to atone for Presbyterian's swift score right before the half, ending the game with a 17-10 edge in the shots department and a slim 9-8 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

While it's Gardner-Webb's high-octane offense that garners the majority of the attention, it was the defensive unit that kept the Blue Hose at bay, holding PC without a proper look at the net over the final 24 minutes to cling to the one-goal win. The close bout stands as the third time in the past four outcomes that a Presbyterian contest was decided by a single boot.

UP NEXT:
The 2022 edition of Senior Day stands as the next date on the calendar for head coach Brian Purcell's group, honoring the quartet of Kori Lawrence, Sydni Dachs, Megan Wilson, and Carolay Ospina in a pregame ceremony before taking on Winthrop at Martin Stadium.

Downing the Eagles in the spring '21 campaign by a 3-1 clip before an opposite result last year, PC will take on a Winthrop squad still in search of their first Big South win at 3-6-2 overall.

The second-to-last home matchup of the season, Presbyterian's weekend duel with the Eagles will be held at 7:00 p.m., broadcasted live via ESPN+.
