Blue Hose Vs. UNC Asheville in 2022 Big South Finale Scheduled for Wednesday Night

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team awaits the final contest of the 2022 slate in the middle of the week from the backdrop of Martin Stadium, hosting the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Wednesday evening in what will be the season's curtain call. Kickoff in Clinton is prepped for 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+ as the Blue Hose aim for back-to-back league W's to close out the semester.

While neither PC nor UNCA will be granted an invitation to the Big South Conference Tournament in November due to the league's strict four-team bracket, both sides will have plenty to compete for in the final chapter of the '22 schedule, with the visitors hoping to end a streak of five losses in their last six appearances. With three conference wins between them in a series that historically has a tendency to sway back and forth at will, Wednesday's last hurrah has the makings of another intriguing affair in a season full of them for the blue and white.

WHEN: Wednesday, October 26
WHERE: Edens Field at Martin Stadium
TIME: 7:00 p.m.
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-12-3, 1-6-1 Big South) – UNC Asheville (4-9-3, 2-5-1 Big South)

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
Mostly a mixed bag throughout the second season of head coach Andy McNab's tenure, the Bulldogs seemed to be on the cusp of a sneaky run near the top of the Big South standings after a statement win over Gardner-Webb back in late September. However, UNC Asheville has taken the losing end of all but one of their meetings since that date, the exception being a 3-1 victory at Longwood 10 days ago.

During this conference lull, the Bulldogs were held to either one goal or zero in 11 straight matchups dating back to August, a streak they have since snapped in the aforementioned win over the Lancers and more recently a 3-2 setback against Big South top dog Campbell that served as UNCA's last home duel of the year.

More than holding their own over the weekend against a CU lineup that has still yet to take an outright loss in league competition, the Bulldogs managed to tie things up in the 71st minute on the fourth goal of the season from Kaiya Boyd. The Fighting Camels only needed five minutes to respond in order seize the close win, dropping UNC Asheville to 2-5-1 in Big South contests.

UNCA has not been their usual self more often than not when competing away from Greenwood Soccer Field, holing a mere 1-6-1 resume in true road meetings. That lone road W came in Farmville versus Longwood, sending the Bulldogs an opportunity to win their final two encounters of the semester away from home.

LAST TIME OUT:
Head coach Brian Purcell's club snatched a thrilling win over High Point in North Carolina last Saturday, deleting a one-score deficit that was created just five minutes in by landing back-to-back goals in lightning-quick succession for a 2-1 victory. The team's first Big South W of the fall after multiple close calls, Presbyterian was lifted to the win behind Reyna Coston's first strike of the season and the fourth score of '22 by Kori Lawrence with 15 minutes to go.

Collecting three points in the comeback win by assisting the first goal and sending in the second on her own, Lawrence was awarded the conference's Offensive Player of the Week nod on Monday afternoon to put a bow on the upset victory. The graduate attacker joins the company of freshman Sloan Spees and junior Kali Zmistowski as other Blue Hose members to have received a weekly honor by the league this season.

When competing against each other, neither side has taken consecutive wins in the series since 2017, as PC and the Bulldogs have traded W's over their last five meetings. Following a 3-0 victory in 2018 and a 2-0 decision two years later, the Blue Hose were vanquished by UNC Asheville last October in North Carolina by a slim 3-2 margin in a game that saw four of those five goals poured in over the second period. Coston provided both of Presbyterian's successful kicks in the 64th and 83rd minutes.
