Back Half of Big South Schedule Begins at Campbell for Women’s Soccer

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer program continues their busy October slate on Friday evening away from home, traveling north to face off with Campbell at 7:00 p.m. in the fifth Big South dual of the semester for longtime head coach Brian Purcell and co. In a series dating back to PC's inception to the conference in the fall of 2007, the Blue Hose will look to snap a four-game losing streak against the Fighting Camels, last defeating CU in a similar road environment to what awaits them tomorrow evening.

With the bulk of the team's final stretch in '22 consisting of road matchups, Presbyterian will lock horns with a Campbell team that does not yet have an outright loss against league competition at 2-0-2 over the past two weeks. Currently in sole possession of 3rd place in the league standings – a spot that would grant them access to the conference tournament in November – the Fighting Camels recently finished a draw with Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, having not taken a full loss since August 28.

WHEN: Friday, October 7
WHERE: Eakes Athletics Complex (Buies Creek, N.C.)
TIME: 7:00 p.m.
RECORDS: Presbyterian (0-9-3, 0-3-1 Big South) – Campbell (6-3-3, 2-0-2 Big South)

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
Stumbling a bit out of the gates but quickly rebounding to boast one of the more eye-catching resumes in the conference, Campbell turned an 0-3-1 start to the season into a four-game winning streak that spanned a full two weeks, capturing a W in six out of seven meetings prior to Tuesday's tie against Gardner-Webb.

Only allowing two goals overall throughout their six victories, including a 2-1 win over Winthrop and a 4-0 shellacking to topple High Point, the Fighting Camels can still lay claim to zero losses when competing on their home turf, with the only slight blemish to their Buies Creek record coming in game #1 in a 1-1 tie versus Mercer.

Blanking the other side four times this year – the second-most shutouts among the 10 teams comprising the Big South – CU exhibits a balanced offensive attack to counter their sturdy defensive core, ranking 3rd in the league in total points (55). Under the direction of first-year leader Jeff Gross, Campbell has assisted on 17 of their 21 strikes as they project a potential trip to the Big South Semifinals should they remain inside the league's top four clubs.

The Fighting Camels seemed as if they were headed for another commanding conference triumph in Tuesday's bout with Gardner-Webb, surging ahead 2-0 early in the second frame. However, in a wild turn of events, the Runnin' Bulldogs rifled back-to-back scores just 44 seconds apart from the same player (the first in a penalty kick scenario) to scrounge up a tie from what initially looked to be a one-sided decision. CU dominated possession in the contest to the tune of a 21-5 edge in total shots, but couldn't find the tiebreaker following GWU's sudden two-score burst.

LAST TIME OUT:
It wasn't due to a lack of offensive opportunities, although the Blue Hose were saddled with a 1-0 loss to Charleston Southern on Tuesday evening over their last appearance, letting just a single miscommunication error early in the second period lead to the lone goal of the night.

Appearing mostly even on the stat sheet between the two sides, with the Buccaneers' fortunate boot in the 54th minute the sole difference-maker in the final tally, Presbyterian's one-score setback became the fifth outcome of 2022 where PC was bested by a single kick, while finding the same exact result in two straight meetings over the first half of Big South play.

Able to produce two goals or more in five instances against the Fighting Camels since becoming conference adversaries, coach Purcell's unit will look for an opposite result to a 3-0 CU win in Clinton one year back.
