CLINTON, S.C. – The third head-to-head matchup of the season's opening month awaits the Presbyterian College women's wrestling squad at the tail end of this weekend, as the sixth-ranked Blue Hose will compete inside the Templeton Center for the first time this year against an unbeaten Mount Olive team through two contests. Grapples will begin at approximately 4:00 p.m. in Clinton as PC preps for their first bout in two weeks, last seen dismantling Limestone in Gaffney by a 31-point clip just before Thanksgiving.
In what will denote the first ever dual setting between the two programs, Presbyterian and head coach Zach Shaeffer will settle in to their brief home schedule by facing a UMO unit that comes into Clinton at 2-0 behind a pair of wins over Lincoln Memorial and Montreat College over the halfway point of November. Sunday's trip to PC will be the first bout in 16 days for the Trojans, led by head coach Dan Willis.
Already seizing four individual championships at the Princeton Open and Eagle Madness tournaments – while wrangling in nine top-four placements at those two events altogether – the Blue Hose, who jumped up two spots to #6 in the latest NWCA national rankings, would claim back-to-back dual W's for the fourth time in their young history should they pick up the win against Mount Olive in 48 hours.
Coach Shaeffer and co. would be able to achieve this feat off the strength of their last showing at Limestone, a one-sided affair from the beginning that grew to a 41-10 decision favoring the blue and white. Eight different wrestlers improved their record in the road environment, accounting for the largest margin of victory in the series and their fifth consecutive triumph over the Saints.
All four PC grapplers who are nationally ranked in their respective weight class (
Samantha Miller in 101,
Ainslie Lane in 116,
Sierra Marie Miller in 130, and
Paige Wehrmeister in 136) backed up their lofty reputations by beating their Limestone opponent, while
Cassandra Lopez, Catherine "CG" Bertrand,
Olivia Waller, and
Isabella Badon followed suit to put the match out of reach.
The four aforementioned wrestlers who sit inside the top five of their weight group have combined for a record of 29-5 with four events in the rearview mirror, as the Blue Hose look to keep the momentum rolling by playing host to the Trojans in two days. One of two home meets for PC's women's side this season, Sunday's encounter with UMO will be broadcasted by ESPN+.
