Blue Hose Set for Pair of Matches This Weekend

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team returns to action on Friday afternoon as the Blue Hose head to Conway to face Coastal Carolina at 1 p.m… The weekend wraps up on Sunday as PC hosts Western Carolina at 1 p.m. from the Templeton Tennis Courts.

"Great opportunity this weekend for the team. It will be a long tough weekend with one on the road and one at home but really looking forward to building off momentum from UNCW. The girls have had a great week of training so looking for us to execute this weekend."

SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS
- Coastal Carolina enters the match on Friday with a 1-2 mark on the season following a 7-0 victory last time out against N.C. Central. The Chanticleers have also face Clemson and Wofford so far this season as well.
- CCU has been led in singles by Anna Babayan and Victoire De Samucewicz who both have two wins thus far.
- Babayan and Valentina Urelli lead the way for CCU in doubles with a 2-1 mark.
- The Chants finished last season with a 14-7 record including 7-3 in Big South play. Coastal Carolina was 7-2 on its home courts last year as well.
- Coastal Carolina has taken the 10 prior meetings from Presbyterian with the Chanticleers defeating the Blue Hose 7-0 last March.
 
SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS
- Western Carolina sits with a 3-2 mark as the Catamounts travel to S.C. State on Saturday before heading to Clinton on Sunday afternoon.
- The Catamounts have already tallied wins against Gardner-Webb, Tusculum and Lenoir-Rhyne thus far this season.
- WCU has four players with three wins thus far as Antonella Benavides, Kata Foldeak, Hoda Habib and Miray Konar each sit with three victories on the year.
- Luzia Obermeier and Jordyn King lead the Catamounts in doubles wins at 3-2.
- PC holds a 5-2-1 record all-time against Western Carolina in the DI era with the Blue Hose winning most recently in 2018 in Cullowhee by the score of 4-3.

SANCHEZ EARNS BIG SOUTH HONORS
- Presbyterian College freshman Claudia Sanchez was named the Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week, Jan. 31-Feb. 7, the league announced on Wednesday. 
- It's the second Blue Hose player in as many weeks to be honored by the league as senior Jessica Leeman was named the conference's Player of the Week last week. 
- Sanchez is tied for the team lead with three singles wins on the year as she and Beth Lacey hold the top spot. 
- It's the first freshman of the week honor for Presbyterian since last spring when Alexa Wilson was honored by the league in March. 
 
PRESEASON POLL
- The Presbyterian College women's tennis team was selected fourth by the league's coaches in the Big South Preseason Poll, as was announced earlier this week.
- The fourth-place selection marks the highest ever preseason ranking the Blue Hose have earned in their time in the Big South surpassing the fifth-place selection during the 2019 preseason.
- Charleston Southern received eight first-place votes and 80 total points as the Buccaneers were tabbed to win the league. Radford earned a first-place vote and earned 62 points. Campbell totaled 57 points and finished in third place with PC earning 56 points and finishing in fourth in the preseason poll. UNC Asheville was selected fifth with 49 points, while Gardner-Webb slid in sixth place with 47 points. Longwood was chosen seventh in the preseason poll with 27 points, with N.C. A&T (15 points) in eighth and Hampton rounded out the field with 12 points in ninth place.

LAST TIME OUT
- The Presbyterian College women's tennis team was edged out by UNCW on Saturday by the score of 4-3 at the UNCW Courts in Wilmington, N.C... 
- Sanchez and Lacey each picked up their third singles win of the season on Saturday.
- Sanchez and Piedra improved to 3-1 in doubles with the clinching point for Presbyterian in doubles action.

UP NEXT
- Following Sunday's match against the Catamounts, Presbyterian heads to Charleston on Wednesday afternoon for a 1 p.m. match against the College of Charleston.
