CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team opened their season with a dominant 16-6 victory over the Howard Bison on Friday evening at Bailey Memorial Stadium. Junior
Abby Edmisten led the charge with a game-high five goals and senior goalie
Heidi Shafer made four saves in the win.
PC got things rolling early as Edmisten netter Presbyterian's opening goal of the season just 41 seconds into the game. The Blue Hose doubled their mark at 9:47 with a goal by
Madison Berg. Presbyterian tallied three more before the end of the 1
st quarter by way of Edmisten, Berg, and
Ana Boothe to lead 5-2.
After Howard ended the 1
st quarter scoring, Presbyterian came back with a 7-0 run as they started to put the game out of reach early. Freshmen
Nya Bettis,
Willow Hammond, and
Gillian Craig all scored their first career goal during the run. Edmisten also scored twice as she picked up the hat trick as PC took a 12-3 lead into halftime.
The Bison opened the 2
nd half with a pair of goals as they weren't going away quietly. The Blue Hose answered right back at the 9:41 mark of the 3
rd quarter to make their advantage 13-5. Both offenses sputtered for a moment, but Edmisten put another one in the net to make it 14-5 at the end of the period.
Presbyterian started to wind down the clock more as the 4
th quarter went on, but was able to score two goals in the process.
Kenzie Partsch scored her first career goal and
Kylie Sullivan slid one past the goalie to put PC up by 11 with 11 minutes remaining. After the goal, sophomore
Rebekah Lenoble replaced Shafer in net and made four saves in the final 11 minutes as PC went on to win 16-6.
"I'm very proud of how the team played today and it's always good to start the season with a win", said head coach
Eric Clakeley. "We had great leadership from our upperclassmen and a big congratulation to Nya, Kenzie [Partsch], Willow, and Gillian on scoring their first career goals."
