Lancers Use Long Ball to Defeat PC

Longwood, Va. – Longwood knocked down 12 three-pointers on its way to handing the Presbyterian College women's basketball team a 76-63 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Willett Hall. The Blue Hose were led in the contest by Maleia Bracone with 18 points and a career-high five steals as Bracone was one of four in double-figures on Saturday for Presbyterian.

Coach Sharp's Thoughts 
I was proud of our fight in the second half but was disappointed in how we started the game. Felt like we just dug a giant hole and that is tough to come back from against a good team like Longwood. I appreciate the response in the second half and hopefully we will carry that over to next week.
 
Scoring the Game
- The Lancers raced out to a 12-0 lead over the first four minutes as the hosts connected on a pair of threes in the early going. Longwood pushed the lead to 20, 22-2 with 3:17 to play in the first quarter. PC chipped away at the Longwood lead as Jade Compton had a team-high five points with the margin at 26-8 after one.
- Both teams went back-and-forth in the early going as neither team was able to string a run as the Lancers maintained a 19-point lead at 34-15 with 7:11 to play in the half. Longwood pushed the lead to 22, 41-19 with a 7-4 burst with 3:55 to go in the opening half. PC used an 8-3 burst down the stretch to cut the Lancers lead to 17 before a late three gave Longwood the 47-27 halftime advantage.
- Similar to the second quarter, Longwood seemed to have answers for the Blue Hose field goals as they pushed it to a 21-point lead at 55-34 with 6:57 to play in the third. PC was able to cut the Lancer lead to 12, 55-43 with a 9-2 burst over the next three minutes led by Nyah Willis scoring six of those points. Longwood closed the quarter with a 10-6 advantage as the hosts were able to extend the lead to 65-49 heading to the fourth.
- Longwood extended the lead to 18, 70-52 with a mini 5-3 advantage over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. The Blue Hose continued to fight as they used an 11-6 burst to cut the deficit to 11, 74-63 but a late bucket from the Lancers gave them the 76-63 victory on Saturday afternoon.
 
Players of the Game
 - Maleia Bracone led the Blue Hose offense with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting on the afternoon. Bryanna Brady recorded a career-high with 16 points, while Nyah Willis added 15 points and Jade Compton totaled 12. Willis led the team on the glass with seven rebounds. Le'Mesha Madden led the team with three assists. Akila Smith led the Lancers with 20 points as Kyla McMakin had 18 points and Kennedy Calhoun totaled 10. Calhoun had a team-high seven rebounds, while McMakin had a team-best five helpers.
 
Stats of the Game
- Longwood posted a 31-of-68 performance from the flood (45.6%) as Presbyterian shot 23-of-58 (39.7%). The Lancers connected on 12 threes compared to just five from the Blue Hose. PC was 12-of-15 at the foul line and Longwood made two-of-four. The Blue Hose had the 36-32 advantage on the glass led by Willis's seven boards. Longwood recorded 13 assists compared to 10 from PC. Both teams scored 34 points in the paint. PC outscored the Longwood bench 30-10 on Saturday. Longwood totaled 12 steals compared to 10 from Presbyterian.
 
Notables
- Bracone set a career-high with five steals in the contest as she led the team with 18 points which is one off of her career-high set against Hampton earlier this month.
- Le'Mesha Madden recorded a career-high with six rebounds which included five on the defensive end.
- Senior Bryanna Brady set a career-high with 16 points as she also connected on a career-high seven field goals on Saturday.
- Jade Compton became the third player in Presbyterian's DI history to score 400+ points in a season as she hit the milestone on the number with her 12 points.
- With her nine free throws, Willis moved to fifth in the Blue Hose DI single-season record book for free throws made in a season with 93.
- Compton with her five rebounds on Saturday moved into a four-way tie for fourth in the single-season DI record book with 180 rebounds on the year.
