Softball Travels to Greenville for First Away Games of Season

CLINTON, S.C.-  The Presbyterian College softball team makes a short trek to Greenville this weekend as they will compete with Iona, George Mason, and host Furman in the Greenville Showdown from February 25-27.

Presbyterian is 5-3 on the season after a perfect 4-0 mark in the PC Invitational. The Blue Hose swept a doubleheader against NC Central, outscoring the Eagles 24-2. After a day off, PC came back with two more wins over Detroit Mercy and App State, both by run rule in the 5th inning (8-0).

Presbyterian is led by freshman pitcher/designated player Morgan Hess, who was most recently named Big South Player of the Week. Hess batted .636 (7-11) with seven runs scored, two doubles and eight RBI as she helped PC to the 4-0 weekend. She belted a grand slam in game one against NCCU, then had three hits and two RBI in the nightcap. Hess added a run-scoring single vs. UDM, then went 2-3 with two runs in the win over App State. She also tossed 8.1 innings in two appearances and struck out 11 batters while allowing just two hits.

Hess leads the Blue Hose in batting with a .500 avg, doubles with four, and shares the lead in RBIs with nine. Sitting right behind her is fellow freshman Jersey Silver with a .480 avg. The speedster leads the team with 12 hits and is a perfect 6-6 in stolen bases.

In the circle, Hess is 3-0 with a team leading 0.98 ERA. She splits time with junior Jenna Greene who tossed a no-hitter in game one vs. NC Central, her second career no-no. The Hamlet, N.C. native is 2-2 on the young season and leads the Blue Hose pitching staff with 33 strikeouts.

This will be Iona's first action of the year. The Gaels, out of the MAAC, played a conference only schedule last year going 22-12. They would eventually fall to Manhattan in game three of the MAAC Championship.

George Mason has split their games so far with a 2-2 record. They went 1-1 against Fairleigh Dickinson and they split two between North Carolina A&T at the Aggie Invitational. The Patriots are led by Taylor Dadig at the plate and Carly Cooper in the circle.

Furman is 3-7 after hosting two tournaments and a non-league game against Georgia Tech. The Paladins started out 2-0 before a four-game losing streak. Their most recent win came over Saint Francis before dropping three straight.
