Women's Tennis Heads to Wilmington for Saturday Match

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team hits the road on Saturday as the Blue Hose travel to Wilmington to face UNCW at 2 p.m. from the UNCW Courts.

"Really excited to play UNCW since it will be the first time in a while. Really great opportunity for the team to see somebody new and compete hard. We have had a great week of training so looking forward to getting out and seeing it translate to the match."

SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
- UNCW opens its 2022 season on Saturday as the Seahawks welcome in the Blue Hose to Wilmington.
- The Seahawks went 9-9 last season with a 1-4 mark in league action.
- UNCW is under the direction of seventh-year head coach Hans Olsen as he has a roster that features five juniors and four graduate students along with a sophomore and freshman.

LEEMAN EARNS BIG SOUTH HONORS
-Presbyterian College senior Jessica Leeman was named the Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week, for the week of Jan. 24-31, the league announced on Wednesday.
-Paired with senior Beth Lacey the duo got the Blue Hose on the board early as they won 6-1 last Monday against Lander in doubles play that PC eventually went onto win. Leeman won 6-3, 6-3 in No. 1 singles as well against the Bearcats. In Saturday's match against Belmont Abbey, the senior earned a 6-2 doubles win at the No. 3 spot before a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles that gave PC a 3-0 edge at the time en route to a 7-0 victory.
- It's the first weekly honor from the Big South for Presbyterian since last spring when freshman Alexa Wilson was named freshman of the week last March. Leeman is the program's first league player of the week honoree since Feb. 2019 when Beth Taylor took home the honor.
 
PRESEASON POLL
- The Presbyterian College women's tennis team was selected fourth by the league's coaches in the Big South Preseason Poll, as was announced earlier this week.
- The fourth-place selection marks the highest ever preseason ranking the Blue Hose have earned in their time in the Big South surpassing the fifth-place selection during the 2019 preseason.
- Charleston Southern received eight first-place votes and 80 total points as the Buccaneers were tabbed to win the league. Radford earned a first-place vote and earned 62 points. Campbell totaled 57 points and finished in third place with PC earning 56 points and finishing in fourth in the preseason poll. UNC Asheville was selected fifth with 49 points, while Gardner-Webb slid in sixth place with 47 points. Longwood was chosen seventh in the preseason poll with 27 points, with N.C. A&T (15 points) in eighth and Hampton rounded out the field with 12 points in ninth place.

LAST TIME OUT
- The Presbyterian College women's tennis team recorded their second straight shutout on Saturday as the Blue Hose downed Belmont Abbey 7-0 at the Templeton Tennis Courts.
-  All six singles players for PC on Saturday earned their second win in singles play of the 2022 season.
