LORETTO, PA- The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team made a comeback after being down 6-1, but it was all for not as the Blue Hose fell to the Red Flash in a tightly contested matchup, 10-7.
The Red Flash were able to open the scoring just over a minute into the game on a free-position shot.
Heidi Shafer made a save on a free-position attempt just 20 seconds later as PC looked to tie it with
Madison Berg, but her shot was denied. Saint Francis would get two in the span of three minutes to up their lead as Presbyterian's offense was stagnant. SFU scored once more right before the end of the 1
st quarter to take a 4-0 lead.
Willow Hammond broke the drought for PC as she ripped one into the back of the net two minutes into the 2
nd quarter. Saint Francis was able to get their four-goal lead back again at the 9:04 mark. The Blue Hose and Red Flash traded goals to end the 2
nd quarter as Berg scored to try and give PC some momentum going into the 2
nd half.
Presbyterian used that momentum as
Sophie Sullinger opened the 3
rd quarter with a goal off the feed from
Abby Edmisten in transition. Less than a minute later, Edmisten scored her own on a free-position to make it a 6-4 game and forced SFU to a timeout. The run continued as
Nya Bettis danced around her defender twice and scored two terrific goals to tie the game, 6-6. On the other end of the field,
Heidi Shafer was locked in making save after save, however, Saint Francis scored two in the final two minutes to take an 8-6 lead into the 4
th quarter.
Both teams began the 4
th quarter with great defense as Saint Francis didn't want to give anything up, and Presbyterian was doing their best to keep the deficit at two. The pressure of the moment seemed to be getting to both teams as each squad had a few turnovers as the clock ticked down to 5:00. It wasn't long after however that the Red Flash scored on a free-position to stretch their lead to three with under five to play. PC had possession late in the game, and with seconds left
Gillian Craig scored, but it was all a formality as the clock struck zeros to end the game.
The Blue Hose conclude their three-game road trip with a matchup against Kennesaw State on Sunday, March 20 at 2 p.m.
