Boyd Homers in Tight Defeat to Spartans

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College baseball team and USC Upstate battled back and forth for the second straight day but the Spartans used a two-run seventh to secure the series on Saturday by the score of 5-4 at the PC Baseball Complex. In the loss, senior Jeremiah Boyd connected on his second homer of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
- PC struck first in the opening inning as Kyle Merkle's sacrifice fly gave the Blue Hose an early 1-0 lead and Jack Gorman added an RBI double to push the lead to 2-0 in the early going.
- USC Upstate answered with a pair of runs in the second before Jeremiah Boyd connected on a solo shot to left in the home half of the frame to push PC back in front 3-2 after two.
- The Spartans evened it up in the third with an RBI groundout that tied the game at 3.
- The score remained even at three until the seventh when the guests scored a pair of runs to take a 5-3 lead. 
- Brody Fahr added an RBI single in the home half of the seventh but PC got no closer as Upstate secured the series on Saturday with a 5-4 win. 

NOTABLES
- Jay Wetherington pushed his hit streak to 16 straight games with his fifth-inning base hit for the Blue Hose. 
- Fahr, Gorman, and Boyd each led the offense with two base hits in the contest.
- Gorman and Fahr each have six multi-hit games on the season. 
- Boyd's second-inning homer was his second of the season and the first for PC in eight games when Boyd connected on one during a 5-0 shutout win over Bellarmine.
- Toth pushed his reached base streak to 14 in a row with his first-inning single.
- Duncan Howard made his fifth start of the season and tallied six strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Howard has at least six strikeouts in his last four starts. 
- Clark Dearman tossed the final 2.2 innings which were a season-high for the Milton, Ga. native.
