CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian College softball team remains on the road this weekend as they travel to the coast to take on Charleston Southern for a single game on Friday, April 1 at 5pm, and a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 starting at 1pm.
The Blue Hose are coming off a series defeat at Campbell last weekend as they took game one 4-0, but lost games two and three to the Camels by scores of 4-0 and 3-1. Game one was highlighted by
Layna Johnson who went 3-3 with three RBI, including hitting her third homerun of the year.
Jenna Greene notched double-digit wins for the second time in her career after the game one victory. She also matched her career-high in shutouts with six. PC was one-hit in game two, but put up more of a fight in game three.
Jillian Hewes hit her fourth bomb of the season and the team had eight hits, but a late error allowed two Camel runs to score which ended up being the difference.
Presbyterian is 6-3 in league play this season, only one game behind league-leaders USC Upstate (7-2). The Blue Hose are currently 2
nd in the Big South in hitting, and rank 23
rd nationally, with a team average of .322. They are also second in pitching with a 1.77 ERA, and in the field with a fielding percentage of .968. Johnson, Hewes, and
Kaitlyn Tucker all sit in the top ten in hitting individually.
Jaiden Tweed,
Morgan Hess, and
Lath Freeman are also amongst the league's best as they place 14
th, 15
th, and 17
th, respectively.
Greene and Hess lead the Blue Hose in the circle with ten and nine wins, respectively. Those numbers rank them tied for 2
nd and 4
th in the conference. Hess leads the team and league in ERA with a 1.22. That mark also puts her 25
th in the country in that category. Greene is tops in the conference in opponent batting average, holding hitters at a .175 clip. The duo also ranks 3
rd and 4
th in strikeouts in the Big South with Greene having 119 and Hess with 93. They are the only pair to have at least 90 strikeouts each.
Charleston Southern comes into the weekend with a 14-17 record, and 4-5 after three weekends of conference play. Prior to losing three straight, the Bucs have won their past four including a series win over Gardner-Webb, and a midweek doubleheader against South Carolina State on Wednesday. Ashley Meckley leads the team with a .315 average, and Annah Junge leads the pitching staff with eight wins. The Bucs have had a streaky season as they have gone on three losing streaks of three or more games, and have gone on two win streaks of four games.
