Softball Hosts Weekend Series with Winthrop

The Presbyterian College Blue Hose softball team plays the Winthrop Eagles in a three-game Big South Conference series at the PC Softball Complex this weekend, April 23-24. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 23 starting at Noon. The final game of the series is Sunday, April 24 at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Presbyterian split a doubleheader at Western Carolina on Tuesday, April 19. Western Carolina won the first game, 6-2. The Blue Hose topped Western Carolina, 2-1, in the second game. Pitcher Morgan Hess recorded 11 strikeouts while only allowing one run in seven innings to pick up her 12th win of the season.

BLUE HOSE BY THE NUMBERS
  • Presbyterian is 12-6 in league play and in fourth place in the Big South Conference standings. The 12 wins is a new school record for Big South Conference wins in a season.
  • The Blue Hose are second in the Big South and 30th in the nation in hitting with a team average of .306. They are second in the Big South and 18th in the nation in pitching with a 2.12 ERA. PC ranks second in the league with a fielding percentage of .964.
  • Kaitlyn Tucker is sixth in the Big South with a .366 batting average. Layna Johnson ranks eighth in the league with a .357 batting average. Johnson leads the Blue Hose with 41 hits. While, Jillian Hewes, Lath Freeman, and Tucker have all tallied 37 hits apiece. Hess leads the Blue Hose with nine home runs and 32 RBIs. Lath Freeman is second on the team with 30 RBIs.
  • Jenna Greene and Hess lead the Blue Hose in the circle with 13 and 12 wins, respectively. Those numbers rank them fourth and fifth in the conference. Hess leads the team and ranks third in the league with a 1.52 ERA. Greene is fifth in the league with a 1.88 ERA. Greene is third in the Big South with 151 strikeouts.
 
SCOUTING WINTHROP EAGLES
  • The Eagles enter the weekend series having won six of their last eight games including a three-game sweep of Gardner-Webb last weekend.
  • As a team, Winthrop has a .253 batting average and a 3.69 ERA. Paige Rivas leads the Eagles with a .375 average, which is the third-highest batting average in the Big South. Reese Basinger has won nine games in the circle for the Eagles. She has a 2.22 ERA with 103 strikeouts this season.
