Women’s Soccer Takes to the Road on Sunday to Meet Alabama State

CLINTON, S.C. – Ready to embark on their second road designation of the young 2022 season, the Presbyterian College women's soccer team prepares to face off with the Alabama State Hornets at the close of the weekend. First touch in the Yellowhammer State's capitol of Montgomery is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

WHEN: Sunday, August 28
WHERE: ASU Soccer Complex
TIME: 1:00 p.m.
RECORDS: Presbyterian (0-2-1), Alabama State (0-2)

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
While on paper, both sides will be searching for their first W of the fall on Sunday, the Blue Hose were able to post their first shutout in their third go-around against ETSU last Wednesday across a 0-0 tie, whereas the Hornets approach the nonconference match with a pair of losses against Big South opponents. Winthrop and Gardner-Webb were both able to fell ASU by scores of 2-0 and 2-1 just 48 hours apart.

Led by 17th-year head coach Jodie Smith, the Hornets progressed through a seven-win season a year ago after stumbling out of the gates with a five-game losing streak to begin. The third of those defeats came at the hands of Presbyterian in late-August, thanks to a 15th-minute goal by Kori Lawrence that amounted to a 1-0 triumph in Clinton.

While the backdrop will be different this time around, PC's track record against ASU lands in their favor since joining the NCAA's Division I ranks, sitting at 4-1 in the two teams' series history, coincidentally outscoring the Hornets by that same margin over their last two meetings.

Originally, a third match for Alabama State was on the docket for Friday afternoon against Jacksonville, although a cancellation of that contest has left the Hornets with three consecutive Big South affairs to start the year, with two of those in Montgomery.

LAST TIME OUT:
The PC line of defense turned in their most efficient outing of the season on Wednesday in their second straight home date against the Buccaneers, with particular praise mounted to the goalkeeping duo of Kelly Hall and Mackenzie Azuero who added up for four saves in crucial moments of the contest.

While the ETSU defense was on par with the Blue Hose's preventative efforts, therefore wrapping things up with a scoreless stalemate, the Presbyterian attack consistently positioned themselves in opportune settings to potentially score their second goal of the semester, coming inches away on several instances.

Hoping to make it three in a row against Alabama State, PC will enjoy the luxury of home field advantage in the two-week period immediately after, not needing to hit the road again for 14 days after visiting the Hornets' turf. The next three bouts for head coach Brian Purcell's squad will emanate from Martin Stadium, starting with a September 1 battle with Kennesaw State.
