MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The seventh-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team – less than one week removed from a sixth-place showing at arguably the highest degree of difficulty tournament that they've seen all year in Louisville – prepares to head back to a standard one-off dual tomorrow evening on the road (a situation they've not been in since November 20) as they will endure a first-time meeting against Brewton-Parker at 6:00 p.m.
Since visiting Limestone and hosting Mount Olive in the latter stages of 2022, the Blue Hose and interim head coach
Brian Vutianitis have been firmly in tournament mode over the past month and some change. Results from their appearances at the WASP Open in Virginia, the Midlands Championships in Chicago, and last week's NWCA National Duals tourney have all proven to be successful endeavors, taking down three other nationally-ranked opponents in the Bluegrass State last week as they bumped up their season's win count to 116.
Wholeheartedly a team effort over their most rewarding trips, Presbyterian has displayed an incredibly-deep lineup worthy of the number beside its name by gaining 45 pins since the season's opening and 32 more technical falls for extra impact. 116-pounder
Ainslie Lane (ranked 4
th in the country across her class) and 123-pounder Catherine "CG" Bertrand added up for a combined 9-1 record over the weekend against three teams positioned lower than PC and two others ranked inside the nation's top five, helping the Blue Hose defeat #12 Adrian College, #18 Lock Haven, and #12 Sacred Heart in less than 48 hours.
Presbyterian gathered at least 26 team points in all three of those victories, aided to the 6
th-place showing behind an undefeated Lane, a 4-1 trek from
Samantha Miller (101), and six combined W's by third-ranked
Paige Wehrmeister (136) and
Cassandra Lopez (109). 130-pounder
Sierra Marie Miller was slotted in seven separate contests over the two-day stretch, gaining four more wins to PC's cause.
Collecting a lead as large as 22 against Adrian, 19 against Lock Haven, and 21 in the final win of the tournament over the Pioneers, Presbyterian has scattered five dual victories throughout the campaign, none more impressive than the trifecta in the Derby City. Six different Blue Hose members have accumulated a win percentage exceeding 60%, led by Wehrmeister (86% at 19-3 as a freshman), Lane (85% at 17-3), and Sam Miller (80% at 16-4). Those three have had their hands raised 52 times between them.
Another participant at the NWCA National Duals – albeit on the NAIA side of proceedings – Brewton-Parker will serve as a formidable foe in PC's return to non-tournament play, possessing 13 dual victories in 20 attempts while going 2-3 in Louisville. The Barons got the better of Missouri Baptist and Baker University (Kansas) before having their bracket stay terminated by Central Methodist in a very close 23-22 decision.
