#7 Women’s Wrestling Gears Up for Final Dual of Year at Emmanuel on Friday

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – Unintentionally feeling a slight hit of déjà vu by traveling right back to Emmanuel for a straightforward dual less than a week after dominating the Lions' tournament last Sunday, the seventh-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling squad faces their final head-to-head challenge of the 2022-23 campaign tomorrow night in the Peach State, competing for the second-to-last time until postseason battles pop up. The first of 10 grapples with Emmanuel will take place at approximately 7:00 on Friday.

A mainstay of the National Collegiate Wrestling Association's (NWCA) top ten over the entire season's three-month window, the Blue Hose – who have mainly gone the tournament route this year to fantastic results – will search for their seventh dual victory since November against a Lions unit that has already participated in 19 meetings for a 68% win rate.

Presbyterian, meanwhile, makes up for their relatively small number of dual appearances by showcasing an astounding collection of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes through various multi-team entries. Their most recent example of tournament supremacy occurred at Emmanuel's own Robert Horton Open only four days ago, achieving 15 wins from five different competitors that led to a pair of gold finishes and two other silver nods for extra convincing.

Racking up a whopping 28 top-four placements over five separate tourneys, the Blue Hose have grasped the top spot in seven different brackets, often ending an event with a laundry list of highlights from each weight class. Samantha Miller (101), Ainslie Lane (116), and Paige Wehrmeister (136) – three PC performers all nationally ranked individually – have combined to win 64 of the 74 matches in which they've been featured.

Among the litany of numbers that makes Presbyterian a daunting opponent for all involved, perhaps no stat-line shines brightest than the fact that interim coach Brian Vutianitis' team boasts four wrestlers with a victory percentage of 70 or higher, led by Wehrmeister's stunning 24-3 mark (88%) during her first year at the collegiate level.

The rookie and Miller both blazed through their respective brackets on Sunday for a 7-0 record put together, followed by season-high second-place earnings for senior Cassandra Lopez and sophomore Catherine "CG" Bertrand. Sierra Marie Miller (130) scooped up a 4th-place slide in one of the day's busiest fields, currently leading the roster with 13 pins out of her 22 overall wins.

While not participating in Franklin Springs last time out, Lane saunters into the team's last dual with an eight-match winning streak in her pocket, emerging victorious in 10 out of her last 12 trips for a combined record of 18-3. One of two PC seniors – along with Lopez - who will be recognized on a public stage for their program contributions at a later date, the Oklahoman has found all but one of her wins this year by either pin or technical fall, seizing nine of the former and eight of the latter.

A Presbyterian performer has ended with their hand raised 137 times since the campaign's first chapter, equaling the 2019-20 squad with six dual W's and searching for more. Their previous head-to-head encounter entailed a rather brisk path to a 29-17 final decision, obtaining a quintet of pinfall wins against Brewton-Parker that translated to a lead reaching as high as 24.

Crossing paths with Emmanuel over four of their tournament entries this season – including last Sunday – the Blue Hose have been able to scout the Lions to a high degree, going so far as sharing a mutual opponent (Limestone), a squad which they both vanquished. Emmanuel has reached two separate winning streaks of three and four matches over the past month, scoring 67 total points in their last two dual W's against the Saints and Tiffin.
