CLINTON, S.C. – Primed for a rare Monday meeting after seizing their first Big South Conference victory of the 2023 stint, the Presbyterian College women's soccer squad hopes to make it two straight in a top-of-the-week trip to Winthrop at 6:00 PM. The in-state duel on Monday will be broadcasted live via ESPN+.
It was all smiles for head coach
Brian Purcell's club during a 2-0 drubbing against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, lifted to the W behind a plus-15 advantage in shots and a two-goal effort by sophomore forward
Sloan Spees.
PC perhaps picked the ideal time of the conference slate to grab some much-needed momentum, awaiting four more matches inside of Big South terrain as they begin a late-season push towards a league tournament ticket.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
- The 2023 path has been one of two sides for the Eagles, under the direction of head coach Spencer Smith in his 14
th season with the program. Grabbing a W in three consecutive late-August/early-September affairs, Winthrop has since taken a loss or tie in each of their past four encounters.
- Three of those sequences have occurred in Big South play, most recently a 1-1 stalemate versus Charleston Southern (their second draw of the campaign). Both of the match's goals were turned in near the halftime break, as the Bucs evened the odds at 42:03 that would ultimately be the final tally from either side.
- Two of Winthrop's three victories have been when hosting duties are in their favor, attempting to break a 37-day skid since their last W which took place over South Carolina State in a 7-2 thrashing.
- Allowing seven scores in their first two league bouts against High Point and USC Upstate, the Eagles' back line performed much more efficiently in the CSU tie, the fifth time this fall conceding one goal or fewer.
LAST TIME OUT
- A member of the 2022 Big South all-freshman team, Spees registered her second career multi-goal outing in the win over Gardner-Webb, finding both scores on an assist by fellow sophomore Lina-Marie Müller.
- Presbyterian never let possession fade towards the opposite end of the field for an extended time on Wednesday, accounting for 19 shot attempts (a season-best in a conference setting) and five corner kick chances.
-
Sarah Dieffenderfer came back into the fold for PC during the later moments of the opening stanza, as the junior striker returned to action for the first time since August 20 following injury complications.
- Ignited by a pink-laden crowd at Martin Stadium (recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month in conjunction with the Laurens County Cancer Association), the Blue Hose received a hard-earned victory that has the potential to carry over into more immediate success through the last two and a half weeks of the regular season.
- Publishing a 3-1 win against the Eagles back in the abbreviated spring '21 lineup, PC has finished on the short end of two straight decisions by a single goal when taking on their Palmetto neighbors, falling 1-0 in the programs' last meeting one year ago.
- Winthrop utilized a 29:51 score to find the win on that night last October, as coach Purcell's group aims for a dose of payback and what would be their fourth all-time W in the long-running Big South series.
