IOWA CITY, Iowa – On a historic day for the sport of women's wrestling, Presbyterian linked up with Iowa, Sacred Heart, and Lindenwood – the first four NCAA Division I schools to enact a women's wrestling program – for the "Trailblazer Duals" at legendary Carver Hawkeye Arena.
One week after starting off the campaign with 22 victories at the Princeton Open, PC was felled by eighth-ranked Iowa (44-1) and fifth-ranked Sacred Heart (26-18) in a frenzied affair, ending the afternoon with a 25-20 triumph versus # 11 Lindenwood in front of a crowd of over 10,000 spectators.
Sophomore
Paige Wehrmeister and freshman
Alyssa Mahan contributed a combined 17 points for head coach
Brian Vutianitis' club, while PC raced past Lindenwood to close the four-way on a high behind back-to-back pins by
Madeline Kubicki and Henlee Hayes in 155 and 170.
Positioned center stage on a landmark day for the growth of women's wrestling, Presbyterian continues to mold and refine their mostly-young roster by picking up the program's first ranked win of the season inside a dual setting.
PC has now captured four top-twenty W's over the past ten months dating back to the prior campaign, as seven different Blue Hose grapplers assumed at least one head-to-head victory against opponents they'll likely see again at the NCWWC Championships this spring.
NOTABLES
- Following up on a 3-1 sprint at last weekend's tourney in New Jersey (good enough to land her in second place), Haynes put the finishing touches on the Lindenwood win by grabbing her third fall of the year in only 44 seconds. Taking place after Kubicki's 65-second pin moments earlier, what had been a 15-all tie quickly became an insurmountable 10-point edge to PC that paved the way for the W.
- Those two falls were aided by four other Blue Hose triumphs in the meeting with the Lions, accumulating five wins via either pin or technical in their final two bouts of the day.
- Toppling Sacred Heart in Louisville last year by a 26-20 clip, Presby was near a repeat thanks to a mid-match 18-0 flurry that erased a 10-0 deficit. Mahan, Wehrmeister, and
Cassia Zammit snared three straight wins to turn the tide, although a couple of TF's from the Pioneers propelled the end result to its resting place of eight points.
- Faced with a difficult draw by having to battle two top-ten clubs in a row, the Blue Hose's intensity never wavered as they brought down the Lions with clutch performances. 101-pounder
Chiara Barbieri started the match off on the right foot with a 10-0 tech, while Shuler pushed the advantage to 7-4 with her second straight win via standard decision.
- Six of the last seven encounters against Lindenwood resulted in a pin (and thus a five-point jump for whomever was able to seize it), as Mahan (123) scooped a 5:46 fall to hoist the lead to its biggest point of eight.
- Presbyterian has now achieved 33 wins through their first two dates of competition, primed for seven more duals from now to the end of the 2023 calendar.
