Catamounts Down PC in Nonconference Closer

CLINTON, S.C. – A pair of successful strikes in either half by the opponent put a damper tone on the Presbyterian College Women's Soccer team's Senior Night festivities on Thursday, leading to a 4-0 shutout by Western Carolina in the eighth and final contest prior to Big South Conference play.

The first ever encounter between the two sides, Presbyterian was unable to get anything by the Catamounts' gritty defensive crew, largely relying on the back line to try and rally the other side of the field.

WCU and starting keeper Leanne Trudel never conceded at any point, however, claiming the win in front of a capacity audience at Martin Stadium.

Mackenzie Azuero, Caitlin Murphy, Mia Prieto, Reyna Coston, and Kali Zmistowski were all recognized in a pregame ceremony for their four-year significance to the Blue Hose program, still with four more home matches left on the radar (all within league parameters).

FINAL SCORE: Western Carolina, 4 – Presbyterian, 0
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-6-1) – Western Carolina (3-2-3)
LOCATION: Edens Field at Martin Stadium (Clinton, S.C.)

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Four separate Catamounts connected for a goal as Azuero and freshman Emma Cooke split time in the box, rolling the advantage to 2-0 in the first frame after back-to-back boots only 45 seconds apart.

- WCU's Maggie Lloyd and Naya Marcil were the culprits to the early lead, a figure that was doubled once Kirsten Hahn and Alexis DeMarco followed suit in the 79th and 84th minutes.

- The visitors assembled 16 shot attempts over the full bout, constantly putting pressure on Presbyterian's preventative efforts until the advantage reached an insurmountable level.

UP NEXT

- PC's longest break of the fall is now in front of them, waiting nine days before their next feature that will fall on the Big South opener two weekends away. A Saturday visit to Radford will be in the cards for head coach Brian Purcell's group, getting started at 7:00 PM on September 23.

- The Highlanders hold a 4-3-1 overall record prior to a Friday face-off with Wofford in Spartanburg, winners of the past two affairs versus the Blue Hose.
