ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Although the Presbyterian College women's soccer team started on a near-perfect note, the end result took a sharp turn towards the opposite side in Wednesday night's Big South affair at UNC Asheville resulting in a 4-1 decision for the Bulldogs.
The seventh straight time that the home team grabbed the W in the overall series between the two clubs separated by less than two hours, Wednesday's league tussle tipped to UNCA to the tune of a 4-0 mid-match run that created the distance.
Sophomore midfielder
Lindsey Malyszek became the first to hit in only the 11
th minute, although the Bulldogs settled in from there and atoned for a last-second defeat at the hands of USC Upstate four nights ago.
FINAL SCORE: UNC Asheville, 4 – Presbyterian, 1
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-8-1, 0-2) – UNC Asheville (5-2-3, 1-1)
LOCATION: Greenwood Soccer Field (Asheville, N.C.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After traveling to Radford over the weekend for the '23 conference opener, a second straight road designation for the Blue Hose was categorized by a tale of two halves. Asheville would outgun PC 3-0 over the final 45-minute period.
- Malyszek was the beneficiary to the contest's first connection in the early going, planted in the precise spot to chip in a close-range look after Lina-Marie Müller's attempt seconds earlier ricocheted off UNCA's keeper, Grace Murray.
- Unfortunately for the Blue Hose, their 1-0 advantage wouldn't be maintained following a Bulldog answer in the 32
nd minute. Asheville kept the train chugging with second-half blows at 53:24, 55:09, and 66:16.
- Presbyterian goalie
Kelly Hall denied seven shots from the home side by the time the final horn sounded, as her accompanying offense registered four attempts throughout the second stanza.
- Keeping in line with recent history between the Big South foes, neither school has beaten the other twice in a row since 2017, as the Bulldogs avenged a 1-0 loss to PC last October that served as the last bout of the '22 semester.
UP NEXT
- The first of four league duels to emanate from Martin Stadium, the Blue Hose will return to their own backyard after a 16-day absence this weekend when hosting High Point at 2:00 PM.
- Head coach
Brian Purcell's roster seized a 2-1 victory against the Panthers in North Carolina 11 months ago, the program's third all-time win over a historically-dominant HPU club and first since 2011.
- The September 30 meeting - broadcasted by ESPN+ - is Alumni Day, recognizing former Blue Hose members in a halftime ceremony. Presbyterian will follow up with Saturday's clash by staying the hosting party on October 4 versus Gardner-Webb.
