JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Converting on two of their first six shots to translate their most productive first half of the 2023 campaign, the Presbyterian College women's soccer team ended with a stalemate against the Jacksonville Dolphins on Sunday afternoon at 2-2 once both sides cooled off after the locker room intermission.
Each of the contest's four goals occurred within the opening half-hour of play, leaving attackers spent and defense to pick up the pieces for both clubs. Both the Blue Hose and JU responded following the flurry, resulting in PC's first tie of the semester and Jacksonville's second straight by the exact score.
Sophomore
Lindsey Malyszek found the back of the net for the second time in four days to give Presbyterian a 2-1 edge in the 26
th minute, an unassisted strike that came after Lina-Marie Müller put her squad on the board at the 16:40 stamp.
The first career score for the second-year German and Malyszek's continued hot streak allowed the Blue Hose to reach their first two-goal first half since April 2021 in a victory over USC Upstate. However, an outright win wasn't obtained thanks to the Dolphins securing a penalty kick opportunity that landed in the 28
th minute.
Now with a record of 1-4-1, head coach
Brian Purcell's club will stay on the road for their next encounter, although with a full seven-day rest in between that meeting versus Davidson on September 10.
FINAL SCORE: Presbyterian, 2 – Jacksonville, 2
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-4-1) – Jacksonville (1-2-2)
LOCATION: Southern Oak Stadium (Jacksonville, Fla.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a sequence that took all of 11 minutes and one second, the scoreboard went from zero each to 2-2 in a quartet of goals that kept ramping up the match's pace. Müller was responsible for starting that hot streak on her inaugural Blue Hose score, standing as the quickest in six affairs that PC has produced a successful boot.
- With 25:33 gone, the Dolphins dealt a blow of their own off a corner kick opportunity. Makala Woodford was the responsible party for the 1-1 equalizer, although the score only remained that way for 21 seconds.
- Before JU could seemingly blink, Malyszek darted into Jacksonville's territory and delivered her third collegiate goal that hoisted her squad back on top. A costly penalty by the Blue Hose in the aftermath brought things right back to square one after Ines Martin cashed in on the aforementioned free kick.
- The eventual draw was put in place at that moment, with neither core letting up an inch over the final 63 minutes of action in a second-half shutout. Jacksonville had coincidentally wrapped up a similar 2-2 tie against PC's Big South nemesis Charleston Southern six days back.
- Müller and freshman
Emilia Lieber gave Presbyterian their last pair of shot attempts as the match crept to its close, while starting keeper
Kelly Hall offered an impressive performance in the box as she denied the Dolphins a connection over their last 11 tries.
- Woodford's last-ditch lob sailed too high with a sole second left on the clock, finishing the teams' fifth matchup against each other with a first-time tie.
- Dating all the way back to Presbyterian's debut match as a Division I representative, the decision rendered two goals for Purcell's team for the third time out of those five clashes against their ASUN adversary.
UP NEXT
- Battling Davidson for the third year in a row and fourth time altogether in one week's time, the Blue Hose hope to achieve a first-time feat and down a Wildcats opponent that currently sits at 2-4 upon falling to Campbell 1-0.
- All six of Davidson's appearances have resulted in one side shutting out the other, scoring four while allowing six. Prior to facing PC, the North Carolinians will duel against Winthrop this Thursday.
- The 2022 meeting between the pair ended in a 2-1 victory by the Wildcats in Clinton, answering a Presby score in the 47
th minute by reeling back-to-back kicks at the 52:44 and 67:04 stamps.
- First touch next weekend is on tap for 2:00 PM, streamed live via ESPN+.
