BRISTOL, Tenn. – In a battle between two dominant Southeast Region schools that featured high implications for the National Championship tournament later this season, the 11
th-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team was unable to defeat its fourth top-ten foe of the year in what amounted to a 28-20 loss at # 3 King on Saturday afternoon.
Blasting out of the gates with a 12-2 technical from 101-pounder
Chiara Barbieri, the Blue Hose were able to achieve a lead as high as eight before the Tornado settled in to claim the final five bouts that weren't decided by forfeit.
Madeline Kubicki (143) and
Ella Beam (191) added PC's last 10 points near the closing stages of the showdown between two clubs positioned inside the NWCA's top 15, unable to slow a King opponent that collected a trio of pins for the separation that was needed in order to snare the win.
Head coach
Brian Vutianitis' club still boasts top-ten victories over the likes of New Jersey City, Lock Haven, and fourth-ranked Colorado Mesa at last weekend's National Duals tournament in Iowa, falling just shy of the W in Tennessee but with four top-15 wins to fall back on prior to Saturday.
They'll quickly switch gears to another dual in 24 hours, visiting Campbellsville in Kentucky for a 3:00 PM opening bout.
