CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team stood 15 minutes away from a potential second-straight Big South Conference victory while hosting Winthrop on Friday night, although a stunner took place in the waning seconds as the Eagles managed to fight back for a 2-2 draw.
Sloan Spees and
Gwen Keiser put the Blue Hose in tremendous shape by scoring at 8:02 and 71:29 respectively, however the story wasn't finished as Winthrop evened the odds with their backs against the wall.
After snagging their first goal at 75:39, the visitors pulled out a shocking twist with exactly 60 seconds on the clock and transformed the result into a stalemate.
At this stage of the season, Presbyterian has posted three ties. All of them read the exact same at 2-2, with a minimum of four matches to go on the regular season schedule.
FINAL SCORE: Presbyterian, 2 – Winthrop, 2
RECORDS: Presbyterian (6-3-3, 1-0-2) – Winthrop (3-6-2, 0-2-2)
LOCATION: Martin Stadium (Clinton, S.C.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Echoing the early moments of last season's victory over Winthrop, Spees wasted little time in putting her side ahead. When PC bested the Eagles in 2023, they did so with an 11
th-minute strike by the All-Conference honoree, literally taking a page out of that game's book on Friday.
- Junior
Abby Ferris delivered the assist on the icebreaker, the third helper of her college career, which led to PC's sixth first-half shutout of the campaign.
- Presby rode that 1-0 advantage into the halftime break, eventually extending that cushion to a deuce once Keiser scored her third goal this year off of a free kick.
- All of Keiser's connections have been exquisite, with this one no exception. Nearly a 40-yard missile, the senior's longball hampered Winthrop's chances of a comeback even further.
- Despite the two-score hole, the Eagles surged back and altered the outcome of the contest as a result. Evyn Schokora landed both of Winthrop's goals on the evening, the last of which happened at the 89-minute mark.
UP NEXT
- Two road trips await PC next week in North Carolina and Virginia, setting their sights on High Point in the immediate future. They'll face the Panthers on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:00 PM.
- Although just one game over .500 overall, HPU has submitted a strong start to Big South competition with two wins and a draw against league mates. They were last seen beating Winthrop 1-0 in a bout where the only goal came in the 60
th minute.
- High Point will battle USC Upstate on Saturday before turning their attention to the Blue Hose, as the Scotsmen hope to make it two straight road wins over the Panthers (having defeated them at HPU in 2022).
