PC Slowed by Buccaneers in Straight Set Match

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Blue Hose volleyball team (5-12, 1-3) fell to the Charleston Southern Buccaneers (3-14, 0-4) in a straight-set battle (18-25, 16-25, 13-25).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
Julia Yurkovich picked up a pair of early kills, but Charleston Southern managed to take a 4-2 lead. Ashley Miller and Elyse Hutchinson added kills to the board for the Blue Hose, though the Buccaneers pushed their advantage to 9-4. The teams traded points, with Brittney Daphnis and Hutchinson contributing kills, bringing the score to 11-7.
 
Charleston Southern grabbed another kill before Presbyterian went on a three-point rally, highlighted by a block from Courtney Williams and Daphnis, followed by another kill from Yurkovich. The Buccaneers reached the 15-point mark first, prompting the media timeout with the score at 15-11.
 
After the break, both teams continued to exchange points, with Hutchinson adding another kill to move the score to 17-13. Despite a kill from Miller, CSU took control by winning four of the next five points, extending their lead to 21-14. The teams traded kills again, with PC's coming from Miller and Williams, but the Buccaneers held firm at 23-16.
 
Daphnis added another kill, and Yurkovich teamed up with Hutchinson for a block. However, Charleston Southern sealed the first set with a 25-18 victory.
 
SECOND SET
Both teams battled to an early 2-2 tie, with Williams landing a kill for Presby. However, Charleston Southern quickly responded with three unanswered points to take a 5-2 lead. Miller broke the Buccaneers' streak with a kill, giving the Blue Hose a spark. They closed the gap to 7-6, thanks to a massive block from Hutchinson and Williams.
 
Charleston Southern regained momentum, scoring the next four points, which led PC to call a timeout. Coming out of the break, Presbyterian grabbed two quick points, highlighted by a powerful kill from Yurkovich. The Buccaneers answered with a pair of their own, extending their lead to 13-8.
 
Both teams exchanged points, pushing the score to 15-10, before a PC attack error prompted the Blue Hose to call their second timeout. Williams added a kill after the break, but Charleston Southern continued their push, scoring three straight to widen the gap to 19-11.
 
The garnet and blue refused to back down, with Daphnis securing a kill before CSU reached the 20-point mark at 20-13. A kill from Yurkovich and a Buccaneer attack error brought PC closer at 20-15. However, Charleston Southern finished strong, taking the second set 25-16.
 
THIRD SET
Charleston Southern jumped out to an early 4-1 lead before Williams responded with a kill for Presbyterian. However, the Buccaneers claimed the next four points, extending their advantage to 8-2. After an exchange of points brought the score to 10-4, Ava Smith registered her first kill of the day. Charleston Southern added two more points to stretch their lead to 12-5, but a service error narrowed the gap slightly to 12-6.
 
Both teams traded points, pushing the score to 14-8, before the Buccaneers reached the media timeout with a 15-8 lead. Following the break, Charleston Southern scored three unanswered points until a kill from Hutchinson stopped their run. Yurkovich added a kill, but CSU soon hit the 20-point mark at 20-10.
 
Another exchange of points left the Buccaneers firmly in control at 22-12. Although Daphnis and Smith combined for an assisted block, Charleston Southern closed out the set with a commanding 25-13 victory.
