Volleyball Hits the Road for Weekend of Conference Tests

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Presbyterian College Blue Hose volleyball team hits the road for some Big South Conference action this weekend with matchups against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs and the Winthrop Eagles.

LAST TIME OUT
The Blue Hose fell to the USC Upstate Spartans on Sunday after a hard-fought four-set battle. Courtney Williams finished with 13 kills at an impressive .385 hitting percentage while adding four blocks and a service ace. Ashley Miller took 12 kills and three service aces. Anna Baranski recorded 34 assists and 12 digs. Celimar Hoyos tallied 21 digs and a service ace. Elyse Hutchinson posted nine kills at a .444 hitting percentage with two blocks.
 
A LOOK AT THE BLUE HOSE
- The Blue Hose currently hold a 5-15 record, securing their wins in hard-fought five-set matches against Delaware State, Temple, and Southern Miss along with straight-set victories over SC State and Gardner-Webb.
- The team has averaged a .166 hitting percentage while taking 10.6 kills per set. They've also shown strength at the net, amassing 144 total blocks (1.8 blocks per set).
- Courtney Williams leads the team offensively with 185 kills (2.37 kills per set). Julia Yurkovich is not far behind with 168 kills of her own at 2.47 kills per set.
- Junior setter Anna Baranski has been instrumental, totaling 592 assists (7.59 per set) while also leading the team defensively with 236 digs (3.03 per set).
- Defensively, sophomore outside hitter Courtney Williams anchors the Blue Hose at the net with 65 total blocks, 16 of which are solo efforts. Brittney Daphnis is a close second, adding 55 blocks, including six solo blocks.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – GARDNER-WEBB
- The Runnin' Bulldogs have taken a 3-16 record so far this season, picking up their wins over Lamar, UNC Charlotte, and Charleston Southern.
- Gardner-Webb has averaged 10.8 kills per set while hitting at a .143 rate.
- Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Cayton White leads the team offensively with 213 kills (3.23 kills per set).
- Redshirt sophomore Sloane Rooney is the teams go-to setter, totaling 219 assists (4.29 assists per set).
- Sophomore libero Molly Littlefield leads the Runnin' Bulldogs defensively with 336 digs (5.09 digs per set).
- The Blue Hose lead the all-time series between the two teams 23-12. The last time that these two teams met was last season where Garnder-Webb won 3-2.
- Alex Hinsey is in his first season as the head coach of the Runnin' Bulldogs.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – WINTHROP
- The Eagles have recorded a 7-8 record with a 4-1 tally in the Big South with wins over USC Upstate, Presbyterian, Charleston Southern, and Radford.
- Winthrop has averaged 13.3 kills per set with a .199 hitting percentage.
- Junior outside hitter, Avery Jolley leads the team in kills with 150 (3.26 kills per set).
- Redshirt junior setter Isabella Murray has totaled 508 assists (10.37 assists per set).
- Freshman defensive specialist Sophia Matthews has amassed 165 digs (4.46 digs per set).
- Winthrop leads the all-time series between the two teams 31-10. The last time that these two teams met was earlier this season when Winthrop walked away with a 3-0 sweep.
- Heather Gearhart is in her second season at the helm of the Winthrop volleyball program.
 
BIG SOUTH LEADERS
Individually, Anna Baranski stands out, ranking third in the conference with 7.59 assists per set. She also places ninth with an average of 3.03 digs per set. Courtney Williams is ranked ninth in the league with a .274 hitting percentage while also placing ninth with 0.83 blocks per set.
 
Brittney Daphnis contributes significantly on defense, ranking tied for sixth in the Big South with 0.89 blocks per set. Additionally, Celimar Hoyos holds eighth place in the conference with an average of 3.08 digs per set.
 
BLUE HOSE DOUBLE-DOUBLES
Presbyterian players have already recorded an impressive 19 double-doubles this year. Junior setter Anna Baranski has been at the forefront, achieving double-doubles in 14 of those contests, including a nine-match streak with double-figure assists and digs earlier in the season. Senior outside hitter Hannah Rowe has also made a significant impact, tallying five double-doubles, including a standout performance against Southern Miss where she notched a career-high 19 kills along with 14 digs.
