Four-Game Weekend Sends PC to Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – Visiting the campus of Georgia Southern for the second time in school history – and first occasion since head coach David Williams took over the program's control – the Presbyterian College softball team wraps up a busy week on Saturday and Sunday for two games apiece versus Purdue Fort Wayne and the GSU Eagles.

Shifting back and forth with four splits in earlier doubleheaders, the Blue Hose hope that their bats stay sizzling from Wednesday's 14-hit, eight-run performance against Queens in Charlotte, the team's first road victory of the season in their second attempt.

Already 11 games into the campaign and holding the Big South's highest collective batting average (.317), Williams' unit will have early start times on both days of the round robin tourney (11:00 and 9:00 AM respectively).

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – PURDUE FORT WAYNE

- It's been mostly a shaky beginning for the Mastodons in 2024, yet to compete on their home field in nine outings although entering the Statesboro fray with a 6-0 shutout over Montana.

- That win over the Grizzlies snapped a six-game losing skid where IPFW averaged just two runs per contest, competing at the UTEP Invitational last weekend where they silenced Montana after falling to North Dakota 7-6.

- Staying true to their road mentality, head coach Amber Bowman's club will not be playing at home until March 20. That's 23 straight games (nearly six full weeks) until the Mastodons have the luxury of no travel.

- Purdue Fort Wayne managed a 17-32 trek in 2023, finishing five games under .500 within Horizon League play.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – GEORGIA SOUTHERN

- Mirroring Presby's start to the year with a tournament in their own backyard, Georgia Southern found a four-game winning streak in the early stages of the season while going into this weekend at 5-3.

- Said four-game streak included a pair of W's over Merrimack, an additional victory against UMass, and an 8th-inning walk-off over Big South member Radford that was enabled due to a Highlanders' infield error.

- After falling to College of Charleston and #18 Florida in a Gainesville event that had three meetings shelved due to weather, head coach Sharon Perkins and co. blitzed Mercer by an 8-0 clip in their most recent appearance.

- Scheduled to play IPFW three times in a row before the Blue Hose come knocking, GSU posted a final tally of 17-34 last spring.

LAST TIME OUT

- One couldn't have envisioned two games with a bigger contrast than PC's two-parter with Queens on Wednesday, dropping an extra-innings slugfest that saw one combined run only to take their frustrations out with an 8-5 eruption in the second half of the DH.

- Although it ended with her first personal loss from a technical standpoint, rookie Kasey Wolfe was stellar in preventing the Royals from securing a single earned run with six K's in 26 batters faced.

- Wolfe is responsible for the team's lowest ERA at the moment (0.61), the third-best mark of any freshman in the nation who has thrown at least 20 innings.

- Junior Kendall Owens continually torched Queens two days ago, going five-for-nine at the plate while recording her team-leading eighth RBI during the Game 2 triumph.

- Additionally, outfielder Kara Starnes put forth a new career-high in the three-run victory, smacking three hits and ending the contest's scoring in the top of the 6th that came after a Royals homer.

- Second-year pitcher Peyton Duncan followed in Wolfe's footsteps for her first complete game of the semester, keeping Queens at bay to the point where the home side never felt a taste of the lead.
