Presbyterian Outlasts Gardner-Webb

CLINTON, S.C.  – Behind four double-figure scorers and timely free throw shooting, the Presbyterian Blue Hose (11-14, Big South: 3-7) defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs (11-13, Big South: 6-3), 77-75, at the Templeton Center on Wednesday night. With the win, the Blue Hose ended Gardner-Webb's six-game winning streak.
 
Kaleb Scott paced the Blue Hose with 17 points while grabbing six rebounds. Kobe Stewart nearly recorded a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Samage Teel scored 12 points and dished out four assists. Crosby James scored 11 points.
 
Presbyterian shot 24-for-30 from the free-throw line.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF –
 Gardner-Webb scored the game's first five points. Stewart got the Blue Hose on the board with two free throws. Scott converted on a three-point play tying the score at five at the 16:24 mark. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored nine of the next 11 points taking a 14-7 lead with 13:49 left on the clock. Gardner-Webb maintained the lead until with 1:40 left on the clock, the Blue Hose closed the half on a 10-0 scoring run taking a 41-38 halftime lead. Crosby James, who connected on two triples during the run, started the Blue Hose scoring run with a three from the wing. Trevon Reddish-Rhone and Teel also scored during the closing stretch for the Blue Hose.
 

SECOND HALF –
After a fast break layup from Marquis Barnett at the 18:10 mark of the half, Presbyterian led by the score of 45-40. Gardner-Webb scored seven straight points taking a 47-45 lead four minutes into the half. Teel converted on two free throws tying the score at 47. Gardner-Webb connected on a three taking back the lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs maintained the lead until Scott completed a three-point play pushing the Blue Hose back in front, 61-59, with 8:40 on the clock. Gardner-Webb scored tying the score at 61. A basket by Scott and two free throws from Reddish-Rhone gave the Blue Hose a 65-61 lead with 7:38 on the clock. Presbyterian remained in front until Gardner-Webb's Caleb Robinson scored inside tying the score at 72 with 1:14 on the clock. Barnett converted on a tough shot just outside the lane giving the Blue Hose a two-point lead. Gardner-Webb's Quest Aldridge made two free throws tying the score at 74. Barnett converted on a layup with 11 seconds on the clock giving the Blue Hose a 76-74 lead. Gardner-Webb's DQ Nicholas was fouled with six seconds on the clock. He made one of two free throws. Gardner-Webb forced the Blue Hose into a turnover after the missed free throw. Gardner-Webb's Abemide Badmus was fouled. He missed both free throws. Then, Barnett made one free throw with two seconds on the clock securing the 77-75 win for the Blue Hose.
 
 
NOTES
  • Scott's 17 points marked his seventh double-figure scoring game of the season.
  • Stewart's 14 points gave him his eighth double-digit scoring game of the season and the 17th of his career.
  • Teel tallied his 18th double-figure scoring game of the season.
  • With his 11 points, James collected his fifth double-figure scoring game of the season and the 69th of his career.
  • Presbyterian's 24 made free throws tied their season-high total.
  • The Blue Hose finished the game with eight blocked shots. Scott had three blocks and Barnett had two blocks.
