PC Hosts Mercer for Tuesday Twinbill

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College softball team continues its four-game non-conference side quest tomorrow afternoon from the friendly confines of home, looking to keep up their good fortune when playing the hosting role as Mercer visits the Palmetto State for a 3:00 PM doubleheader.

Last seen in their own park for the Big South opener against SC rival Winthrop – a series where the Blue Hose captured the rubber match with an 8th-inning walk-off to claim two out of three victories – Presby will go head-to-head with the Bears for the fourth and fifth times since head coach David Williams entered the program.

Each of the prior years that PC clashed with Mercer has seen a different backdrop, battling the Georgians at a neutral site in Florida prior to the 2020 pandemic before then going to Macon for a rematch just eight days after that.

The two schools last butted heads on March 13, 2021 – also in the Peach State – in a game where just three starters from that date remain on the roster (Kaitlyn Tucker, Jillian Hewes, and Kara Starnes, currently in their senior seasons).

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

- Mercer prepares for their inaugural visit to Clinton after winning two/thirds of a home set against Wofford last weekend, denoting the first Southern Conference sequence of the year. The Bears obtained back-to-back W's by vastly different margins (10-2 and 4-3), although unable to complete the sweep in an 11-8 thriller that the Terriers took.

- Third-year head coach Lindsay Fico directs a unit that has only been able to muster a 3-12 mark when competing outside of Macon, winning just one of nine true road games which occurred all the way back on Valentine's Day (a 10-2 mercy rule over Georgia State in Atlanta).

- PC's upcoming adversary is still trying to find a more consistent formula, going 4-6 over their last 10 appearances albeit with the aforementioned Wofford triumphs.

- Altogether, the Bears' .291 hitting average sits in second place throughout the SoCon, exhibiting three in the league's top 15 BA's: Emma Dorval (.370, 7th), Alyssa Woods (.366, 9th), and Tori Hedgecock (.355, 12th)

LAST TIME OUT

- Presbyterian was forced into two defeats during the middle of last week as their road struggles persisted, falling via walk-off in Game 1 before a 10-2 setback in the nightcap at Furman on Wednesday.

- First baseman / designated player Kendall Owens registered three RBI as well as a run scored across the two-parter, the team's third different in-state opponent in 2024 to this point.

- The Blue Hose are presently tied with Gardner-Webb for the highest fielding percentage in the Big South (.971), never committing an error in 12 innings versus the Paladins beside just 23 for the semester (the lowest figure in the division).

- Super-senior Jenna Greene sits inside the nation's top 30 with 83 strikeouts in 84.2 innings of work, well ahead in the program record books with 671 K's over her five seasons under Williams.

- As a matter of fact, Greene is also Presbyterian's all-time leader in ERA (2.28), total victories (54), and shutouts (21).
