Softballs Jolts to Jacksonville for Five-Game Weekend Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Following a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the 8th that propelled the Presbyterian College softball team to a pulse-pounding extra-innings victory against Wofford, the Blue Hose continue the non-conference portion of the 2024 schedule with a sequence of five games in 72 hours at Jacksonville.

Head Coach David Williams' gang will engage in a Friday doubleheader with Marist (possessors of a nine-game winning streak), going on to play another two-parter with Tarleton State the next day at the neutral site in Florida. PC will then finish the round robin tourney by battling the hosting Dolphins at 2:00 PM on Sunday.

Presby's three opponents have combined to reach 29 wins through the first month of the campaign, kicking off a seven-game sequence of dates away from Clinton for the blue and garnet.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – MARIST

- PC will go up against the most polished of their three adversaries – at least from a statistical standpoint – on Friday when they look to put an end to Marist's two-week-long streak of wins only. The Red Foxes vanquished Hampton (thrice), both Fairleigh Dickinson and Gardner-Webb (twice each), as well as Central Connecticut and Norfolk State on their way to nine straight W's.

- None of Marist's victims throughout the streak have put up more than four runs against them, claiming three of those wins via mercy rule while hitting at least eight scores in five of those appearances.

- Head coach Joe Ausanio's club swept the MAAC weekly awards over their last five triumphs, already bringing in seven conference accolades in 2024 with at least one honor per week. Leading pitcher Kiley Myers has logged 48 strikeouts in 45 innings, tallying five complete games next to a 2.33 earned run average.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – TARLETON STATE

- While the Texans have been very efficient when competing on their home turf (6-1 in their backyard of Stephenville), it's been a less consistent haul in other affairs (5-10). Prior to getting an invite to the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, TSU bested Prairie View A&M twice as part of their .500 resume.

- Tarleton matched up with the Penn State Nittany Lions out of the Big Ten Conference last weekend, narrowly falling to PSU by margins of 8-7 in eight frames and 11-8 in their most recent encounter.

- Senior outfielder Kelci Hill has been an extraordinarily tough out for opposing pitchers, currently batting .472 with 14 extra-base hits for head coach Mark Cumpian's crew.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – JACKSONVILLE

- The only school that Presbyterian will duel only once this weekend, Jacksonville will serve as the tournament hosts after grabbing one of the biggest victories in program history last Sunday. JU upset 12th-ranked Florida State in a game where they were curiously outhit 10-3, pulling away late for a 6-5 triumph over the Seminoles in Tallahassee.

- It's mostly been a mixture of good and bad for head coach Erica Ayers and co., winning five of their seven affairs at their home site. Ball State, Samford, Fordham, and Manhattan have been the ones to take an L against the Dolphins when going to JU's venue.

- Fifth-year lefty Shelby Harpe has emerged as one of the most well-rounded pitchers at the mid-major level, producing an impressive 0.73 ERA in 28.2 innings of work (14 strikeouts next to only three earned runs).

LAST TIME OUT

- It was a moment of pure ecstasy for the Blue Hose on Tuesday night in the university's first-ever meeting against Wofford, utilizing an 8th-inning walk-off by freshman Kasey Wolfe to gift PC its 23rd home win since February of 2023.

- Most of the contest was dominated by superb pitching from record-holder Jenna Greene and the Terriers' Abby Greenwood, managing 14 K's between them while leaving the opposing offense with 17 combined stranded runners.

- None of that mattered when Wolfe stepped up to the plate in Presby's fourth extra-inning scenario of the semester, delivering a laser to right field that brought home Kelby Goodrum for the game-winner.

- The W was the 52nd of Greene's career while simultaneously being the super-senior's 21st shutout, both of which are already PC records within the program's 16-year NCAA Division I history.
