Softball Returns to League Action with Weekend Visit to Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Making a final push in pursuit of a top four spot in the Big South and thus gaining a ticket to the conference tournament in May, the Presbyterian College softball team will venture to Gardner-Webb for another three-game set starting on Saturday.

The Blue Hose will play a pair against the Runnin' Bulldogs tomorrow beginning at 1:00 PM, penned for the same time on Sunday in the series finale.

Going into the penultimate weekend of the regular season, PC sits two games back of a top-four placement in a division that is largely equal across the board. Presby will match up against a G-W foe that has already surpassed the 30-win count, although curiously on the outside looking in at the campaign's closing stretch.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

- Further emphasizing the importance of this particular league series, Gardner-Webb will be finishing up their Big South slate against the Blue Hose as a team that has only managed one series victory in conference terrain (Radford) despite their impressive overall record.

- Outside the league atmosphere, the Runnin' Bulldogs made early headlines by defeating Big Ten member Indiana by a 7-4 clip at a neutral field in Alabama. After dropping the last two meetings at USC Upstate, G-W took on fifth-ranked Duke three days ago and ate a 14-1 beatdown.

- A peculiar team to analyze at this stage, head coach Bailey Wigness and co. have won more games than anyone in the conference, yet would not be in the Big South tourney if the postseason began today.

- Gardner-Webb has put together the best collective batting average in the Big South (.276), while ace pitcher Andrea Lyon has earned 101 strikeouts on the year and has been selected for the conference's weekly award list three times since February.

LAST TIME OUT

- Presbyterian's last non-conference obstacle came in Raleigh against ACC member NC State, dropping a doubleheader on Saturday while the finale was shelved due to local weather issues.

- With just six games remaining on head coach David Williams' docket, the Blue Hose have only competed in one Big South series outside of Clinton, a matchup with Longwood where the Lancers took two out of three.

- A very streaky series between the two conference mates, Presby has locked up with the Runnin' Bulldogs 24 times since 2015. The bulk of PC's wins over G-W have occurred at home, going 3-9 at Boiling Springs.

- Mallory Fletcher and Kendall Owens delivered back-to-back scores in Game 1 of last year's set against Gardner-Webb, with the latter posting a walk-off single to wrestle away a 4-3 victory. G-W recovered from there to win the final two encounters by respective scores of 5-1 and 6-2.
