COACH POLLOCK'S THOUGHTS
"To say I am proud of our guys is an understatement. They put it all on the line and gave it everything they had this weekend. From big pitches, to big plays, to timely two out hits… there was no shortage of excitement. It's everything they signed up for and it was fun to watch."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Spartans took an early lead, scoring two runs with a homer in the top of the first inning.
- With two outs on the board in the bottom of the first inning,
Joel Dragoo reached first base after being hit by a pitch. Shortly after,
Noah Lebron smashed an RBI double to left field, putting the Blue Hose on the scoreboard. The momentum kept rolling as
Jake Randolph singled to left center field, bringing Lebron home and tying the score at two runs each. With Randolph advancing to second base on a wild pitch,
Jackson Hugus drew a walk, putting runners on first and second.
Jay Wetherington then delivered an RBI single to left field, advancing Hugus to second base and Randolph across home plate.
Aaron Hobson followed up with a single through the right side, allowing Hugus to score and giving the Blue Hose a 4-2 lead after just one inning of play.
- Â In the top of the second inning, Upstate hit a solo home run to cut Presby's lead to just one run.
- In the bottom of the second inning, Gorman led off for PC by reaching first base after being hit by a pitch. Following Gorman's advance, Fahr reached base due to an error by the Spartan's second baseman, allowing Gorman to move to second base. Dragoo then delivered a crucial single that advanced Fahr to second base and brought Gorman home for a run. Next up, Lebron executed a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt, advancing runners to second and third base. Randolph followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Fahr to score another run for PC. The Blue Hose continued their offensive surge as Wetherington launched a double to left field, driving in another run and extending their lead to 7-3.
- In the top of the third inning, the opponents managed to score one more run, narrowing PC's lead to 7-4.
- The game proceeded quietly through the fourth inning, setting the stage for a pivotal moment in the top of the fifth inning when the Blue Hose executed a crucial double play, preventing Upstate from scoring any runs and ending the inning cleanly.
- Upstate was able to tie up the game at seven runs apiece after putting up three in the top of the sixth inning.
- A home run from the Spartans in the top of the seventh inning gave them a one run lead with a score of 8-7.
- In the bottom of the seventh inning, Hugus started things off by drawing a walk as the leadoff batter. Wetherington then advanced him to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Following that,
Adam Featherstone came in as a pinch runner, and Hobson moved him to third base with a sacrifice fly. Featherstone capitalized on a wild pitch, scoring the game-tying run for PC.
- Lebron kicked off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single to the third baseman and advanced to second base on a passed ball. After Randolph drew a walk, putting runners on first and second base with two outs,
Ryan Becker stepped up for his first plate appearance. Becker delivered a clutch RBI single up the middle, giving the Blue Hose a 9-8 lead and putting them back in front. But the momentum didn't stop there. With runners still on first and second, Wetherington stepped up and hammered an RBI double to left field, extending Presbyterian's lead to two runs as they headed into the top of the ninth inning.
- Presbyterian's strong defense, led by
Sean Hollister on the mound, shut down Upstate's offense, holding them scoreless in the top of the ninth inning, to seal the series with a 10-8 victory.
