CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College lacrosse team was upended by Palmetto adversary Furman on Saturday afternoon in the squad's sixth home feature of 2024, falling behind early and ultimately taking a 17-6 defeat.
Emerging from an offensive drought against a swarming Paladin back line, PC acquired four strikes in the final period. However, a deficit that reached its largest point of 12 was simply too much to overcome.
Abby Edmisten and
Emma Claire Mills – a combination that personifies both the leadership and future of the program – made up four of the Scotsmen's goals while
Kylie Sullivan and
Brooke Chandler wrapped up the team's scoring output for the day.
Now at 0-3 in Big South competition, the Blue Hose will be the visitors for their next two assignments, traveling to High Point and Gardner-Webb next week. They'll hope to tame the Panthers at 5:00 on April 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Now at 144 career connections across an exceptional five years, Edmisten got her unit out of the blocks by zooming past Furman keeper Lily Rathbun with exactly three minutes to go in the opening chapter.
- Unfortunately for head coach
Eric Clakeley's group, a couple of 3-0 spurts by the Paladins sandwiched Edmisten's swing, leading to a 6-1 edge and 9-2 cushion by the time both sides trotted to the locker room.
- Blanking the Blue Hose in the 3
rd, Furman managed an eight-goal run to put things out of reach and find their largest lead at 14-2. Presby collected three unanswered goals in the early moments of the 4
th, although three of the final four hits came by the visitors.
- Normally massive factors on the offensive end, Mills and junior
Willow Hammond registered seven caused turnovers between them.
Kayleigh Aitken and
Naomi Lauderbaugh split up the bout with one half apiece in the keeper's box, saving seven attempts.
- While the Paladins were only three-for-nine in free-position opportunities, a difference of +18 in total shots – combined with a seven-point afternoon from Big South goal-leader Sophia Buzelis – carried Furman to the victory.
UP NEXT
- HPU (Presbyterian's next opponent in North Carolina) was saddled with a 13-10 loss versus reigning league champion Mercer, although they'd bounce back in a big way by bludgeoning Winthrop 20-10 in their next try.
- The Panthers went toe-to-toe with Gardner-Webb on Saturday and promptly ploughed threw another divisional foe, improving them to 6-5 on the campaign after winning eight contests last spring.
- Wednesday's meeting will signify the 14
th clash between the two conference mates, as High Point held their breath at Bailey Memorial a season ago before squeezing out a 16-12 decision.
