CLINTON, S.C. – Despite a terrific performance by senior goalkeeper
Kelly Hall that included nine saves, the Presbyterian College women's soccer team was unable to provide the counter to a 13
th-minute connection from College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 at Martin Stadium.
Baked in sunlight and forced to play defense more often than desired, the Blue Hose couldn't replicate their offensive success from Thursday's season-starting 3-2 victory at Wofford as the Cougars held tight for the remaining 77 minutes of action.
Going up against an opponent who decimated South Carolina State with four second-half strikes in their season-opener, PC mustered a single shot-on-goal for the contest (five in total) while C-of-C pitched their second shutout in a row.
Presbyterian will look to shake off the weekend result with a visit to Furman on August 22, slated for a 6:00 PM beginning. It'll be the halfway point of a season-opening six-match stretch against schools from the Palmetto State.
FINAL SCORE: College of Charleston, 1 – Presbyterian, 0
RECORDS: Presbyterian (1-1) – College of Charleston (2-0)
LOCATION: Martin Stadium (Clinton, S.C.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It took the Cougars three tries at Hall before they'd find their only goal of the day, submitted at the 12:39 mark. From that point, their final 17 attempts were either off-target or snuffed out by Presby's stout keeper.
- For Hall, her nine saves are the second-most in a sole match over her PC career. She denied five in the opening 45 minutes and went on to stifle four more after the halftime intermission.
- Junior attacker
Sloan Spees accounted for the blue and white's shot-on-goal just before the match reached the 22-minute tab.
Isabel Lasota found arguably the squad's best chance at an equalizer, although that endeavor was slightly high at the 46:48 stamp.
- Hall continuously left C-of-C frustrated in their bid to increase the lead, as the Blue Hose limited the Cougars to six goals fewer than their tally against S.C. State three days ago.
UP NEXT
- Head coach
Matt Smith's club will look to make it two-for-two as the visiting side when facing off with Furman this Thursday. The Scotsmen will aspire for their second-ever W against the Paladins, having knocked them off in the 2017 opener.
- Furman posted an identical start to the '24 season when comparing them to PC, earning a 3-2 win against Charleston Southern after unleashing a trio of goals in the second period.
- The Paladins will tangle with the South Carolina Gamecocks on Sunday night before turning their attention to Presbyterian, continuing PC's Palmetto tour in the non-conference portion of the campaign.
