PC Football Reschedules PFL Opener, Will Now Play at Davidson on Sunday

CLINTON, S.C. – Following the effects of Friday night's tropical storm that left much of Laurens County without power, the Presbyterian College football team has officially postponed its PFL opener against arch-rival Davidson to this Sunday, September 29. The location of the game has now changed, with Davidson serving as the hosts.

The Blue Hose will head to the Wildcats' venue at 5:00 PM on Sunday, interrupting what was scheduled to be a string of three consecutive home meetings. Instead, they'll travel to Davidson for the second year in a row in what will be the first of eight conference duels.

Admission for tomorrow's contest is free for all attendees.

CAROLINA BORDER CLASH

 • Sunday night will be the 35th edition of the "Carolina Border Clash" rivalry, a feud between two PFL opponents separated by just over two hours. A new tradition was formed in 2021, with the Presbyterian-Davidson winner receiving the "1919 Cup" trophy in reference to the first year that the two schools met on the gridiron.

• The Blue Hose have faced Davidson eight times since 2010 after a brief hiatus in the series, as the Wildcats joined the Pioneer Football League in 2001. PC would enter the conference 20 years later, restoring the annual matchup and continuing the rivalry's 100-year history.

• After defeating Davidson four straight times to jump ahead by one in the all-time series, the Wildcats have flipped the script and captured the victory in four of the last five meetings versus the blue and garnet. PC's last W over Davidson came in the shortened Spring '21 slate, a 29-24 result at Bailey Memorial Stadium.

• When the 1919 Cup was instituted in 2021, so too was another innovation in the rivalry: a nighttime kickoff. Each year that PC faces off with Davidson from this point forward, the game will be played under the lights. This is the second straight contest with a 7:00 start for the Blue Hose, tangling with Gardner-Webb last weekend.

OPPONENT PROFILE

• A team designed to run the ball repeatedly with power formations and call passing plays sparingly, Davidson has had an extra week of preparation for this contest after enacting their BYE last Saturday.

• Falling to Georgetown by 22 points in the '24 opener, the Wildcats have cruised past their most recent adversaries (all outside of the Division I ranks), drilling both Catawba and Point by 35 and 30, respectively.

• In just three games, Davidson has already rushed for over 1,100 yards on 180 carries. Of their 16 touchdowns, 13 of them have been on designed runs. Nearly 85 percent of their total yards have been accumulated in the ground game.

• Head coach Scott Abell has delivered two Pioneer Football League championships since taking over the reigns in 2018, sending the Wildcats to over 40 victories in that span and a combined record of 23-11 over the last three full seasons.

• Running back Mari Adams was included on the preseason Watch List for the Walter Payton award, an honor presented by Stats Perform to the best offensive player in FCS football. As a sophomore last year, Adams ranked fifth nationally with 15 rushing touchdowns and led everyone in the PFL with 1,019 yards on the ground. He has already been given the ball 46 times in three games this season, scoring five more TD's and 382 total yards.

NEARING THREE HUNDRED

• Set up to be Presbyterian's leading tackler for the fourth consecutive season, senior linebacker Alex Herriott is on the precipice of yet another milestone. He needs just two more tackles to become the third player in PC's Division I era (since 2007) to reach 300 for a career.

• Only three games ago, Herriott put himself in third-place in PC's D-I record book for career tackles, exceeding the totals of recently-inducted Big South Hall of Famer Justin Bethel.

• The All-PFL honoree has averaged 90 tackles per season throughout his exceptional career for coach Englehart, never missing a game since '21 and forging 118 tackles last season alone.

• In 2023, the Hanahan native scattered 70 tackles of the solo variety which ranked inside the FCS top ten. Should he finish this season as PC's leading tackler yet again, he would become the first player in Presby's D-I history to do that in four straight campaigns.

BIG-PLAY BOUND

• Primarily due to senior running back Zach Switzer's open-field ability, the Blue Hose currently rank sixth in the nation at the FCS level in average kick return yardage (27).

• Switzer - a 2023 transfer from the Memphis Tigers - is one of just nine FCS players to have returned a kickoff for a touchdown this season, doing so on a 90-yard sprint at Erskine.

• PC is also one of the nation's best at passing for long yardage, going into game number five with an average of 16 yards per completion. That leads all schools in the PFL and ranks fourth in the country.

AROUND THE PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE

• League play takes center stage in Week 5 with four PFL contests on the slate. Drake opens defense of its title when San Diego travels to Des Moines. Dayton looks to build on its two-game PFL win streak to end 2023 when it travels to the Hudson River Valley to meet Marist. Valparaiso looks for its first road win when it faces a Morehead State team that did not lose at home in 2023.

• Drake brings an 11-game PFL win streak into Saturday's tilt against San Diego. The Bulldogs' last conference loss was on October 22, 2022, when they dropped a 48-14 decision to Davidson as part of a then-season-opening eight-game losing streak. Since snapping that skid, Drake is 12-5 overall.

• PFL teams have claimed four wins against their scholarship FCS brethren. Butler (at Murray State), Dayton (vs. Saint Francis), Drake (at Eastern Washington), and San Diego (vs. Cal Poly) helped the league post its most wins against FCS non-conference teams since 2019.
