CLINTON, S.C. – 75 percent of the evening's goals were submitted in the opening half on Sunday night at Martin Stadium, resulting in a 2-2 tie between the Presbyterian College women's soccer team and the Panthers of Georgia State.
The Blue Hose remain unbeaten through the last five encounters, going toe-to-toe with a talented Sun Belt opponent and equaling the score at two apiece thanks to a 50
th-minute penalty kick from senior
Sarah Dieffenderfer.
Lina-Marie Müller began the bout with her ninth point in the past three matches in only the 16
th minute, helping Presby reach 16 total goals in the still-young season.
Sunday was the final non-conference feature to be held in Clinton, as head coach
Matt Smith's squad will visit both Western Carolina and Mercer to wrap up the pre-Big South slate over the next seven days.
FINAL SCORE: Presbyterian, 2 – Georgia State, 2
RECORDS: Presbyterian (5-1-1) – Georgia State (1-3-2)
LOCATION: Edens Field at Martin Stadium (Clinton, S.C.)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first 45 minutes were headlined by a heap of offense, as GSU responded to Müller's early longball with two goals of their own which fell less than three minutes apart.
- Presbyterian's defense (a unit that just blanked previously-unbeaten Citadel on Thursday) regained their composure after that sequence, denying the Panthers any more points for the final 58 minutes.
- It took only 4:46 after intermission for Dieffenderfer to even the odds with a successful PK, capitalizing on a foul against
Lindsey Malyszek inside the box.
- That was the second cash-in for the senior this year, both of which have occurred in home affairs. She beat out GSU keeper Jaddah Foos with a high-arching ball, sailing to the back of the net for ultimately the last strike of the game.
-
Gwen Keiser accounted for PC's last shot with less than seven minutes left, as the Blue Hose D performed excellently in the clutch by surviving three corner kicks down the stretch.
- Senior goalie
Kelly Hall thwarted five Georgia State attempts in the stalemate, two of which came at 83:18 and 86:39 on the board to preserve the tie.
UP NEXT
- A formidable foe stands in PC's way for their second-to-last non-con encounter, traveling to reigning SoCon Tournament champion Western Carolina on Thursday.
- The Catamounts have picked up smoothly from their '23 roster that achieved 13 wins before eventually falling to #6 Alabama in the NCAA Tourney, winning three outings and not allowing a single goal in the last three appearances.
- Beating Georgia State and Gardner-Webb by a combined difference of 7-0, WCU posted a similar result to Presbyterian earlier this afternoon with a scoreless tie at East Carolina.
- First touch in Cullowhee is scheduled for 7:00 PM, just the second-ever meeting between the two programs.
