CLINTON, S.C. – On a night where nine Presbyterian College women's soccer seniors played their final home match and one of those seniors broke a 12-year record in the opening half, PC dueled Winthrop to a 2-2 tie on Friday.
The Blue Hose were unable to keep their grip on a two-nil halftime advantage, as the Eagles managed a pair of scores within a nine-minute period to send the match to a draw.
Presbyterian is now eliminated from contention in the Big South Tournament with one game remaining on the 2025 schedule.
In back-to-back seasons, PC and Winthrop have ended at a 2-2 tie. Last year's meeting (also in Martin Stadium) was eerily similar to Friday, as the visitors battled back with two swift goals on that occasion as well.
Head coach
Matt Smith's club will conclude the season against Charleston Southern in a road setting, going up against the Bucs next Wednesday. First touch will take place at 3:00 PM.
FINAL SCORE: Presbyterian, 2 – Winthrop, 2
RECORDS: Presbyterian (3-9-3…0-5-2) – Winthrop (4-6-5…2-3-2)
LOCATION: Martin Stadium (Clinton, S.C.)
SPEES BREAKS THE RECORD
- Fifty days after she tied the program record for most career goals in the Division I era (spanning all the way back to 2007),
Sloan Spees put up a storybook moment in the 25
th minute with her 17
th career score.
- That makes her number one all-time since the Blue Hose made the D-I transition, jumping previous record-holder Sara Simpson who took the top spot in 2013.
- A three-time All-Big South recipient, Spees caps off her career at Martin Stadium with a record-setting play that helped PC start on the right foot.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The ball hovered over Presby's side of the field for the majority of the first half, leading to another Scotsman strike with just 54 seconds left until intermission.
-
Anna Hussey did the honors on an assist from sophomore
Harlan Lyons, putting PC up by a deuce at the midway point.
- Despite only three shots from Winthrop in the final 45 minutes, they maximized their limited opportunities and managed to claw all the way back to a tie with goals at 50:15 and 59:32.
- Presbyterian out-shot the Eagles 20-8 for the entire evening, but were unable to hop back in front once Winthrop had evened the odds.
- PC scattered eight shots over the last 30 minutes of play as they tried to deliver another momentum swing, with one of them landing on-goal.
- Four different Blue Hose players notched at least one point on Wednesday, including Lina Müller who assisted on Spees' record-breaker.
UP NEXT
- Charleston Southern was the one Big South squad that Presbyterian was unable to play last season due to the effects of Hurricane Helene at the time, meaning that next Wednesday's matchup will be the first in this series since 2023.
- Furthermore, it will be the first time that PC has visited CSU in four years. Their most recent encounter in Clinton was a 1-1 draw.
- The Buccaneers were beaten soundly in their last league effort against Longwood (5-2), but will look to get back in the win column versus Radford on Saturday.
