Lancers Score with Six Minutes Left, Downing PC 1-0

FARMVILLE, Va. – An 84th-minute goal was the difference-maker in Saturday afternoon's Big South Conference scuffle between the Presbyterian College women's soccer team and Longwood, as the Blue Hose fell short of their first league victory 1-0.

Taking a scoreless tie into intermission, PC was out-shot by the Lancers in the final 45 minutes by a 12-3 clip. That persistence ultimately led to Longwood breaking the ice at 83:14.

Presbyterian is now 3-7-2 overall after tying UNC Asheville earlier this week, conceding a goal within the final 10 minutes for the second straight time.

A full week of rest is in the cards for head coach Matt Smith's unit, playing just four more games until the regular season is finalized. The Scotsmen will visit High Point on October 11, beginning at 4:00.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Prior to Saturday's meeting, PC and Longwood had tied in each of the past four times they butted heads. That includes a penalty-kick shootout in Farmville last November where the Blue Hose achieved their first postseason W since turning Division I, advancing to the Big South Tournament Semifinals.

- In the waning moments, it seemed that a fifth consecutive draw was in the cards as neither defense had given an inch at that point.

- PC had just dueled Asheville to a stalemate three days earlier, but were unable to grab another point in the conference standings thanks to an 11th-hour hit by Sam Fischer (her sixth goal of the campaign).

- With barely six minutes to work with to try and reach another tie, the Blue Hose instead were on the wrong end of a close loss.

- Allie Williams, Anna Hussey, and Lina Müller made up Presby's four shots-on-goal, while the duo of Febe Dombrecht and Gracie Moulton combined for five saves at the keeper position (Moulton played the final 35 minutes).

UP NEXT

- Next weekend will set up another road trip for coach Smith's squad, facing an HPU opponent who has yet to pick up an outright win in 2025 across 11 attempts.

- High Point has played to three draws this fall, including their most recent appearance versus Charleston Southern which was settled at one apiece. Both of those scores were in the opening half, just six minutes apart from each other.

- ESPN+ will have live coverage of the league bout, as PC looks to avenge a 2-0 loss to the Panthers last season.
