WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team (2-4) suffered a road defeat on Friday morning (Nov. 21), falling to UNC Wilmington 75-55 at the Trask Coliseum.
PC trailed by only two at halftime before the Seahawks broke the game open in the second half, outscoring PC 46-28 in the final 20 minutes to pick up the win.
Krystal Haddock and Aminata Tal led the scoring front for Presbyterian, scoring 13 apiece. Haddock posted 11 points in the first half in her return to the lineup for the Blue Hose. She also led Presbyterian in rebounding with 8 boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Seahawks controlled proceedings in the first quarter. UNCW scored the first six points of the game before Samantha Mullock got PC on the board with a layup. The Seahawks continued to dominate early, taking a 12-2 lead halfway through the period. Krystal Haddock helped get PC closer in the final minutes of the quarter, but UNC Wilmington led 18-8 after the first period.
Second Quarter
Haddock paced the Blue Hose in the second quarter to help PC close the gap. The Blue Hose quickly cut into the UNCW lead to open the second period off a three from Daniella Velez. The Seahawks led by as many as nine before Haddock began to have her way in the paint. Haddock went on a 7-0 run by herself highlighted by an and-one to get PC within two down 22-20. UNCW responded to build a seven point lead, but the Blue Hose finished the half strong. Two layups from Aminata Tal in transition got PC down just 29-27 at the break. Haddock led the Blue Hose with 11 points and four boards through 20 minutes.
Third Quarter
The scoring broke open for both teams in the third quarter. Both teams traded baskets before Ore Ogunwolere's first three of the season got PC within one down 35-34. Tal kept PC close in the middle of the period before UNCW began to impose itself and separate from the Blue Hose. The Seahawks led only 38-36 with six minutes left but finished the quarter on a 12-5 run. UNCW led by as many as 11 with only two minutes left, but a three from Allie Sykes helped PC trail only 50-41 going into the final period.
Fourth Quarter
UNCW continued to maintain its advantage in the final period. Tal scored PC's first four points of the quarter, and Allie Sykes made three free throws after being fouled shooting a three to keep PC in the game early on in the fourth. PC trailed just 8 down 55-47 before UNCW separated for good. The Seahawks went on a 9-0 run to break the game open and take a 64-47 lead. In the end, UNCW outscored PC in the second half 46-28 and claimed a 75-55 victory over the Blue Hose.
