CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team (1-1) suffered a 78-41 defeat to Wake Forest on Thursday night (Nov. 6) in its first road contest of the season.
Daniella Velez went 3-of-5 from the three point line to lead the Blue Hose on the night, finishing with 9 points. Ja'Cia Cunningham added two threes as well for Presbyterian. Cunningham also was PC's leading rebounder, grabbing six for the game. As a team, PC tallied 13 offensive rebounds and 30 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Wake started fast out of the gates, scoring the game's first six points before Morgan Boyd got the Blue Hose on the board with a layup. A three from Daniella Velez cut the Wake Forest lead to just 11-7 with two minutes left to go in the opening period. While the Demon Deacons pushed the lead up to six in the final minute, a three from Ja'Cia Cunningham in the closing seconds got the Blue Hose back within three to end the quarter. Through 10 minutes, Wake led the Blue Hose 15-12.
Second Quarter
Shelby Fiddler scored off an offensive rebound to open the second quarter, cutting the Wake lead to just one. The Demon Deacons followed right after with a 6-0 run that came to a close on an Ore Ogunwolere layup. Halfway through the quarter, Aminata Tal drilled a three from distance to get PC within four down 23-19. However, Wake Forest responded with another run in the final minutes of the half, going on a 7-0 to extend the lead to 30-19. Aretha Linger finished the half with a layup in transition, but the Demon Deacons took a 10-point 33-23 lead going into the break.
Third Quarter
Wake opened the half with a layup before two free throws by Boyd got the Blue Hose on the board in the third quarter for the first time. A layup by Ogunwolere followed by another three by Cunningham got Presbyterian within single digits of Wake down just 39-30. However, right after the Demon Deacons separated for good from the Blue Hose. Wake went on an 18-1 run to finish the third quarter, leading 57-31 going into the final period.
Fourth Quarter
Velez made two threes in the opening minutes of the final quarter for Presbyterian. Linger followed with a layup before the Demon Deacons went on another run. Two free throws by Tal gave PC 41 points halfway through the period, but the Blue Hose never scored again. Wake finished the night on a 10-0 run to claim a 78-41 win over Presbyterian.
