Blue Hose Drop Home Contest to Gamecocks

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team (2-11) suffered a 74-39 home defeat on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 21), falling to Jacksonville State at the Templeton Center.

 

The Gamecocks controlled the game from the tip. As a team, Jacksonville State finished the afternoon shooting 53.7 percent from the fieldout. Aretha Linger led the Blue Hose with 12 points to go along with two steals and a blocked shot. This is the second time this season that Linger has scored in double figures. 


Morgan Boyd and Ja'Cia Cunningham each logged seven points on the afternoon for PC. Boyd made a career-high two threes as well, giving her five total made threes on the season.

 

  

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

The Gamecocks dominated from the start, jumping out to a quick 8-2 lead out of the gate. Morgan Boyd helped the Blue Hose get on the board with her fourth three of the season. The Gamecocks went up 12-5 before the Blue Hose embarked on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to just one with three minutes to play. However, Jacksonville State finished the quarter strong, taking a 19-12 lead after 10 minutes of action.

 


Second Quarter
Ja'Cia Cunningham opened the second quarter with a basket before another Gamecock run helped Jacksonville State separate for good. The Blue Hose were able to cut the lead to eight down 25-17 following an Allie Sykes three-pointer, but the Gamecocks once again had the answer. Jacksonville State grabbed a 35-20 lead going into the locker room.

 

 

Third Quarter
The Gamecocks quickly took a 20-point lead before baskets from Linger and Cunningham got PC on the board in the second half. Boyd later hit her second three of the game with 6:47 left, but the Blue Hose were held scoreless the rest of the period. Going into the final quarter, Jacksonville State held a commanding 60-27 advantage.

 

 

Fourth Quarter
Cunningham completed a three-point play to get Presbyterian going offensively in the fourth. Ogunwolere and Krystal Haddock added baskets as well for the Blue Hose later in the period. In the closing minutes, Linger scored five points for PC to conclude the afternoon with 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Ultimately, Jacksonville State prevailed 74-39. 

 


UP NEXT
The Blue Hose will open Big South play on New Year's Eve against Radford at 12:00 p.m.
