GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team (2-8) returned to action on Wednesday night (Dec. 3), dropping a road contest at Furman 74-56 at Timmons Arena.
The Paladins forced 26 Blue Hose turnovers for the game, also holding Presbyterian to just 39 percent shooting from the field. Furman had an advantage from the charity stripe as well, making 20-of-31 free throws for the game.
Aminata Tal led the Blue Hose on the night on the offensive end of the floor, scoring 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Ore Ogunwolere and Morgan Boyd also scored in double figures for the Blue Hose, both scoring 12 respectively.
The Blue Hose controlled the glass for the game, outrebounding the Paladins 40-33. Aretha Linger led PC for the night with 7 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Paladins got out to a fast start, scoring the first six points of the game. Aminata Tal got the Blue Hose on the board, but Furman continued its quick start to go up 10-2 halfway through the quarter. Tal followed with back-to-back baskets to get the Blue Hose within four. Tal continued with the hot hand, getting the Blue Hose with two down 12-10 with under three to play. She finished the quarter with a game-high 8 points. Morgan Boyd scored her first points of the game off an offensive rebound to get PC within one before the Paladins scored with three seconds left to take a 17-14 lead after the opening period.
Second Quarter
The Paladains picked up where they left off to open the second, scoring five quick points to go up 21-14. Tal scored PC's next five points to get up to 13 points on the night. However, the Blue Hose still trailed 26-19 halfway through the second quarter. Furman went up by as much as nine, but Boyd scored her second basket of the game to get PC back within five. The Paladins finished the half strong, holding the Blue Hose without a field goal the final four minutes of the half to build a 32-24 lead at the break. Through 20 minutes, Tal led the Blue Hose with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Third Quarter
Ore Ogunwolere opened the second half with an and-one layup for the Blue Hose. Tal followed a couple of possessions later with a jumper to get PC within five down 33-28. While Furman responded to go back up 9, Ogunwolere drained her first three of the game to cut the Blue Hose deficit to just four halfway through the third quarter. The Paladins maintained their advantage, but another basket from Boyd got PC within five down 43-38 with two minutes left. However, Furman finished the quarter strong, building its largest lead of the game. Through three quarters, the Paladins led PC 51-40.
Fourth Quarter
The Paladins maintained a double-digit lead in the opening minutes of the final period, going up 60-42 with six minutes to play. An Ogunwolere and-one followed by baskets from Boyd and Tal got PC within 10 down 60-50 with three minutes to play. However, the Blue Hose did not get any closer. Furman pulled away down the stretch, coming away with a 74-56 victory.
NOTABLES
- Ore Ogunwolere scored a career-high 12 points for the Blue Hose. This is the second time this season that she has scored in double figures for PC.
- Morgan Boyd also scored a career-high with 12 points, getting into double figures for the first time in her career.
- Ogunwolere matched her season-high in rebounds with six.
- Aretha Linger tied her career-high with 7 rebounds. Linger returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Nov. 6.
- Aminata Tal scored in double figures for the sixth time this year.
