CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian overcame a 15 point first half deficit to take the lead late in the second half but the Blue Hose (11-17, Big South: 4-9) rally fell short in an 81-77 loss to the Winthrop Eagles (19-10, Big South: 9-5) in the Templeton Center on Wednesday night.
Kobe Stewart and
Kory Mincy scored 18 points apiece.
Carl Parrish scored 12 points off the bench.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF – The Eagles scored the game's first 10 points.
Kaleb Scott got the Blue Hose on the board with a layup. With Winthrop leading 17-9 with 14:24 on the clock, the Blue Hose scored 10 of the next 15 points cutting Winthrop's lead to 22-19 after a corner three from Parrish with 10:51 on the clock. Winthrop went on a 12-0 run pushing their lead to 34-19. After a dunk from Stewart and two free throws from Mincy, the Blue Hose cut Winthrop's lead to eight, 41-33, with 2:22 left in the half. Winthrop scored five of the half's final nine points taking a 46-37 halftime lead.
SECOND HALF – Over the first seven minutes of the half, Presbyterian outscored Winthrop, 17-7, taking a 54-53 lead after a jump shot in the paint from Mincy.
Iverson King, Scott, and Stewart also scored during the run. Winthrop would regain the lead. The Blue Hose responded with a three from Stewart retaking the lead, 57-55. The lead exchanged hands a few times over the next five minutes. With Winthrop leading 67-65, Presbyterian scored seven straight points taking a 72-67 lead after a dunk from Parrish with 6:06 on the clock. Winthrop scored eight straight points retaking a 75-72 lead. A three-point play from Scott tied the score at 75. Winthrop scored four straight points to regain the lead for good.
NOTABLES
- Stewart's 18 points marked his 23rd double-digit scoring game of the season and the 44th of his career. Stewart also grabbed five rebounds in the game.
- Mincy recorded his 24th double-figure scoring game of the season and the 30th of his career with his 18-point performance. Mincy dished out seven assists in the game.
- Parrish scored 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the three-point arc. Parrish has collected 12 double-figure scoring games this season and 14 in his career.
- Presbyterian shot 51.5 percent (17-for-33) from the field in the second half.
- Presbyterian scored 24 bench points and 30 points in the paint.
