Softball Pummels Rhode Island in Sunday Matinee

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The last chapter of the Catamount Classic at Western Carolina was a solid one for the Presbyterian College softball team on Sunday afternoon, erasing the memory of a one-run loss to Rhode Island two days earlier in an 11-1 mercy-rule whipping.

Putting up a total of 21 runs in their last two victories, the Blue Hose put the finishing touches on a tournament where they left the yard 10 times. Senior first-baseman Kendall Owens drilled her second dinger of the last 24 hours to aid PC to their largest margin of victory this year.

Head coach David Williams' gang acquired at least two runs in each of the first four innings during the methodical win, outhitting the Rams by eight as Peyton Duncan did her part by tossing the full contest and grabbing her fifth individual W.

The only snafu from the Scotsmen came in the bottom of the 1st after already building a 3-0 advantage, closing the tourney on an 8-0 run led by freshman Baxleigh Arnette's career-best four RBI.

Playing away from home for the first time this semester and going 2-for-5 at the WCU tournament, PC will now face Western Carolina in a Tuesday doubleheader back in Clinton. The festivities will begin at 1:00 PM.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Owens, Blair Darby, and Maddi Wood all received two runs-batted-in as the Blue Hose decimated their northeastern opponent, as all three of Presby's extra-base swings drove in at least one score.

- A PC player logged four RBI in a single game twice this weekend, as Arnette joined the company of Mallory Fletcher who also hit that stat line on Friday versus North Carolina A&T.

- Darby and second-year utility Kasey Wolfe have been quite the duo in Cullowhee over the last three days, adding up for 16 hits, 14 RBI, and five home runs as the Blue Hose improved to 9-8 on the campaign.

- Presbyterian spread out a total of 50 hits in their five games this weekend, batting .350 as a complete unit and producing 41 runs since Friday.

UP NEXT

- PC's most common non-conference adversary since turning Division I in the late 2000's, coach Williams' group will face off with the Catamounts for the sixth consecutive season. The Blue Hose boast an 11-3 all-time record when playing WCU in their own backyard.

- They'll go up against a Western Carolina crew that won their fifth straight outing on Sunday, advancing to a perfect mark in their self-hosted tournament and beating the Scotsmen 8-2 in round one.
