CLINTON, S.C. – Despite a program-record-tying performance from
Matthew Rollison and a strong push in the late innings, the Presbyterian College baseball team (16-19, Big South: 8-4) came up short against the Western Carolina Catamounts (16-18, SoCon: 2-7) on Tuesday night, falling by a final score of 9-7.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After two scoreless innings to start the night, Western Carolina broke through in the top of the third with a six-run outburst, highlighted by a leadoff home run from Trey Spees.
- The Catamounts extended their lead to 8-0 in the fourth after Trent Turner launched a two-run homer to right.
- PC responded in the bottom half of the inning. Rollison led off with a double, followed by a Conner Bradley single to move him to third. A walk by Jackson Hugus loaded the bases, and Brody Linker's RBI drove in the Blue Hose's first run. Moments later, Eli Lazio worked a walk and some heads-up baserunning allowed Bradley to score before the inning ended.
- Western Carolina added another run in the fifth with a solo home run from Josh Ossiander to make it 9-2.
- After a scoreless sixth, PC mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Smith and Trey Fenderson each singled to set the stage for Rhogue Wallace, who launched his first home run of the season—a three-run shot to center.
- The Blue Hose continued the momentum as Ryan Ouzts drew a walk and Rollison followed with his third double of the night. A throwing error by the Catamounts' third baseman allowed both runners to score, trimming the deficit to just two runs.
- However, Presbyterian couldn't push across any more runs in the final two innings, and Western Carolina held on for the 9-7 victory.
