ROCK HILL, S.C. – Although losing the overall series two-games-to-one in the penultimate Big South set of 2025, the Presbyterian College softball team managed to salvage the third meeting against their South Carolina rival on Saturday afternoon thanks to a 7
th-inning rally.
PC was walked off by Winthrop in the first half of the conference doubleheader (3-2), appearing that a sweep was imminent until the Scotsmen scored four runs in the last two frames to emerge with a 4-3 triumph in the series finale.
Morgan Farthing and
Kendall Owens didn't waste a golden opportunity in the top of the 7
th with the bases loaded, sending three runs home on two straight singles. That set the stage for pitcher
Peyton Duncan to slam the door and win her 12
th game of the spring.
Sporting a 21-26 record overall, head coach
David Williams' team will conclude the campaign next weekend from their own backyard when league-leading Radford comes to town for three contests.
NOTABLES
- Following Saturday's finishes, Presbyterian can now say that they've competed in 13 games this season that ended with a final margin of just one run. PC has won seven of those 13, including the Winthrop comeback.
- Duncan was mostly superb all weekend in an important Big South series, holding the Eagles scoreless in 12 of her 14 innings pitched. After tossing six straight scoreless innings yesterday, she limited Winthrop to six more zero's in the finale while her only blemish was a three-run homer in the 3
rd.
- Surpassing 150 innings on the year, Duncan prevented Winthrop from back-to-back walk-offs by striking out three in a row with runners sitting on the corners in the bottom of the 7
th. She has now collected 118 K's since February, the second-most of all pitchers in the division.
- Presbyterian's resurgence in Game 3 wouldn't have been possible without a 6
th-inning blast by
Kasey Wolfe, her sixth home run of the season (a number that leads the roster). The preseason all-leaguer hit .400 over the weekend in 10 at-bats while also pitching a complete game in the first half of Saturday's DH.
GAME TWO – WINTHROP def. PC, 3-2
- For the second clash in a row, Presbyterian put up two runs in the opening inning but failed to gather any more over the remainder of the game. This time, Owens and Wolfe were the beneficiaries of a first-frame error by Winthrop that gave PC a 2-0 head start.
- The blue and garnet would create just two more hits over the last six chapters, however, saddled with a tough loss where they never trailed until the last swing of the ballgame.
- A two-run jack in the 3
rd sent the duel to a two-all stalemate, where it would stay up until the last moments. Megan Powell (who pitched all seven innings in games one and two) delivered the game-winning RBI with one out left in the tank, scoring Emma Jackson from 3
rd to walk it off and clinch the series.
GAME THREE – PC def. WINTHROP, 4-3
- The mood was sour offensively for most of the finale, as PC couldn't get on the board with four hits over the first five frames. Wolfe's solo bomb in the 6
th swiftly reversed that feeling, beginning the revival after trailing 3-0.
- Winthrop decided on a pitching change for the final inning, a move that the Blue Hose took a liking to. Farthing and Owens gave the Blue Hose their first lead of the contest with only one out tallied, scoring shortstop
Baxleigh Arnette, pinch hitter
Audrey Burton (who singled in her lone at-bat), and pinch-runner
Sabrina Rose.
- Now the pressure had suddenly switched to the Eagles, but it seemed for a jiffy that they'd break the hearts of PC again after two base hits in a row created some no-out traffic for Duncan.
- The Scotsmen bent a bit, but would not break. Duncan sent three batters in a row back to the dugout to finish off her 13
th complete game of the season in style.
UP NEXT
- No team in the Big South has carved a better league record than PC's last regular season opponent, as Radford heads to Clinton next weekend with an 11-4 division ledger.
- The series starts on Friday with a 6:00 opening pitch, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday which is scheduled for 1:00. It'll be the first time in 10 days that the Highlanders have played, beating Winthrop twice in their last conference endeavor.
- Saturday's doubleheader will also serve as Senior Day for four special members of the PC softball program:
Mallory Fletcher,
Emma Yanes,
Kelby Goodrum, and
Kendall Owens.
