CLINTON, S.C. – In the second-to-last day of the 2025 regular season, the Presbyterian College softball team was forced to combat an opponent who had already clinched at least a share of the Big South Conference championship on Friday night while also enduring a four-hour storm delay.
The end result was a 7-2 score in favor of the visiting Radford Highlanders, securing a 4-0 lead just minutes before the lengthy suspension and staying ahead thereafter.
When factoring in Mother Nature's interference, Game One of this weekend's league series lasted just over six hours in length. Four of PC's five hits occurred right after the delay, clawing back within two runs but ultimately falling by five.
The remainder of the series will play out early tomorrow in an effort to beat another ominous forecast, enacting a 10:00 AM doubleheader in the 2025 curtain call.
Mallory Fletcher,
Emma Yanes,
Kelby Goodrum, and
Kendall Owens will all be recognized in a pre-game ceremony on Senior Day, a crew that has combined for 63 home victories in their time with the program.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Things were moving along well for starting pitcher
Peyton Duncan in the first couple of innings, holding her own against an opponent who had won 10 of its prior 13 meetings.
- That's when the Highlanders (who are ranked #25 in the latest Mid-Major national poll) brought on two-base runners with walks and reeled in a couple of rapid homers in the top of the 3
rd.
- The game was officially put on hold in the next inning and the Blue Hose went right to work following the wait with four hits in the bottom of the 5
th. Catcher
Maddi Wood was hit by a pitch with the bases crammed to get PC on the board, leading to
Molly Mattas' RBI-single that cut the lead in half.
- Radford responded quickly, however, with their third longball of the evening that scored three runs in the next frame. Duncan threw all but two outs in the series opener, relieved by freshman
Grace Kelley in the 7
