FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College softball team was dealt a tough hand on Saturday afternoon in the third Big South Conference series of the season, dropping two drastically-different outcomes to Longwood (4-3 and 9-1).
Although junior pitcher
Peyton Duncan kept the Lancers quiet for the majority of Game One, a couple of late bombs by the home side tilted the score away from Presby's favor and handed the Blue Hose their second straight one-run loss.
Everything managed to go right for Longwood in the second section of the twinbill, winning by run-rule to bring the Scotsmen an overall record of 19-18 (3-5 in Big South efforts).
Head coach
David Williams and co. will try to salvage a game out of the weekend by resetting for the third contest, scheduled for Sunday at 12:00 PM on ESPN+.
GAME ONE – LONGWOOD def. PC, 4-3
- Both results when Presbyterian last hit the field 10 days ago at College of Charleston ended up with a one-run difference, and the same could be said for the opener against Longwood where all seven combined runs were tallied in the last three innings.
- It took the Lancers 14 at-bats before they could finally muster a hit off of Duncan, although the magnitude of those hits was large after PC took the lead in the top of the 5
th on an RBI-double by
Kendall Owens and a run-scoring single from senior mate
Mallory Fletcher.
- Longwood's first connection ended up being a solo home run with two outs already submitted in the bottom of the 5
th, giving way to a second HR (this one scoring a trio) in the same inning.
- Now down two and trailing for the first time, the Blue Hose managed to load the bases in the 7
th thanks to an
Audrey Burton single,
Kasey Wolfe walk (one of three free passes administered by the preseason all-leaguer), and an error-assisted Owens reach.
- However, PC could only grab one run on an RBI ground-out after crowding the pads, concluding the affair with a strikeout.
GAME TWO – LONGWOOD def. PC, 9-1 (5 Innings)
- Things spiraled quickly for the blue and garnet after getting on the board first with Owens' 23
rd RBI of the spring, succumbing to a 9-0 Longwood sprint that ended the bout after five frames.
- The Lancers sized up six scores in the bottom of the 4
th to create enough cushion for the run-rule, outhitting Presby 10-3 and directing another longball as well as an RBI triple.
- Freshman
Grace Kelley threw 85 pitches in her fifth start of 2025, while PC offensively struck out only once. Since a Game One triumph at Charleston Southern back in late-March, the Blue Hose have been bested in five of the last six attempts.
