Malyszek Earns Second Career Brace as PC Routs Alabama State, 5-0

CLINTON, S.C. – The temperature was hot but the Presbyterian College women's soccer team was even hotter on Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium, smashing three first-half goals and earning their second win of the young season against Alabama State 5-0.

Senior Lindsey Malyszek scored twice in a single match for the second time in her college career, with those hits coming just 16 minutes apart. Altogether, four different PC players scored as they remain unbeaten at 2-0-1.

After Thursday's planned bout with Mercer was called off due to weather, the Blue Hose started their four-game homestand with a statement. Presby picked up 27 shots in all, posting the program's highest single-game goal count in seven years.

As mentioned, head coach Matt Smith's crew will stay in Clinton for their next contest, entertaining Furman this Thursday at 7:00 PM. PC bested the Paladins in Greenville last season by a 2-1 differential.

FINAL SCORE: Presbyterian, 5 – Alabama State, 0
RECORDS: Presbyterian (2-0-1) – Alabama State (0-2-1)
LOCATION: Martin Stadium (Clinton, S.C.)

SCINTILLATING SCORING

- The last time that Presbyterian managed five goals in a singular outing was on October 6, 2018; a victory versus then-Big South opponent Hampton. On Sunday, the last two strikes were submitted after the 77-minute mark from Harlan Lyons and transfer Anna Hussey.

- That 2018 season was also the last time that PC had achieved three goals before the halftime break, a feat that they accomplished against Alabama State courtesy of Malyszek and Sloan Spees.

- In fact, the tally was already 2-0 before the match had even turned five minutes old. PC stayed the aggressor from start to finish, allowing their defense to turn their second shutout in three attempts this year.

SPEES RECORD WATCH

- By breaking open the scoring less than three minutes in, Spees registered the 15th goal of her exceptional career. That puts her one away from tying the program's Division I record which dates back to 2007.

- Sara Simpson (2010-13) is the lone PC player in the D-I era to have totaled 16 scores. Spees has now tied the second-highest number which was also set by Tori Lopez (who coincidentally played in the same four-year stretch as Simpson).

BLINK & YOU'LL MISS IT

- A 2018 triumph over The Citadel was the last time that PC scored twice within the first 10 minutes of a match. Malyszek and Spees tag-teamed to make it happen on Sunday, putting the Hornets away before they knew what hit them.

- Presbyterian out-shot ASU by a 13-3 clip in the opening 45 minutes, accomplishing their most lopsided win of the Smith era which started 12 months ago.

GOALS ALL OVER

- Once Malyszek and Spees had given the Blue Hose a comfortable advantage, Hussey and Lyons put the last two nails in the coffin.

- Hussey's score came with an assist by freshman Maddi Merryweather, the first college point in her career after starting for the first time in place of an injured Lina Müller.

- Two of Presby's first-half goals featured an assist by sophomore Allie Williams, the same player who tied for the team lead in that department last season (along with Müller).

- Rookie keeper Febe Dombrecht did her part as PC's offense brought the fireworks, making four more saves before lending the final minutes to Gracie Moulton.

- The freshman from Belgium has now played a total of 266 NCAA minutes and has conceded just one score. No one has scored on the Blue Hose D in the last 176 minutes dating back to last Sunday's S.C. State win.

UP NEXT

- This Thursday will be a very intriguing non-conference affair that pits two in-state schools against each other who each pitched a shutout on Sunday. While PC was busy lighting up the scoreboard, Furman too blanked their opponent in a 2-0 win over Charleston Southern.

- Furman scored twice in barely two minutes at 59:02 and 61:13, giving them their third W in a row which also includes a 2-1 decision over Georgia State and their own 5-0 blowout against Bob Jones.

- Frequent foes of the past 17 years, PC had lost every match against Furman except one until last season's 2-1 thriller on the road. After Emilia Lieber's early make in the 12th minute, then-senior Gwen Keiser ended up with the game-winner on a beauty of a free kick with 25 minutes left to play.
