ATHENS, Ga. – The Presbyterian College volleyball team put up a solid fight against a perennial Southeastern Conference contender on Friday night in the first of three matches at the UGA Bulldog Classic, ultimately losing to Georgia in a sweep by scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-15.
In just her seventh match as a collegiate head coach,
Maddie Moss nearly gave Georgia a rare Set One defeat as the Blue Hose never trailed until UGA reached their 23
rd point.
PC battled valiantly against a program that has won four times via sweep already this season, ending with a 3-0 loss for only the second time in seven tries.
The Blue Hose will stay in Athens for another affair in less than 24 hours, going up against Florida International at 2:00 PM on Saturday.
SET ONE – GEORGIA def. PC, 25-22
- Every minute of Set One was played within a three-point window, with Presbyterian surprising the Bulldogs early and taking respective leads of 11-8, 17-14, and 22-20.
-
Courtney Williams and
Ashley Miller synced up for seven kills in that first frame, while junior transfer
Anisa Dorlouis assembled two aces and seven digs.
- Only three points away from handing Georgia a Set One defeat, PC fell victim to a set-ending 5-0 flurry by the home side. Presby hadn't let the Bulldogs reach more than two points in a row until the script quickly flipped at the last moment.
SET TWO – GEORGIA def. PC, 25-19
- Proving that they wouldn't go down easily, the Blue Hose went on an impressive mid-match rally to come roaring back from a seven-point deficit.
- Trailing 9-2 and again at 11-4, PC's 3-0 spurt was answered by a similar stretch of three in a row by Georgia which made it a 14-7 ballgame.
- That's when the Scotsmen released a vicious outburst, producing six unanswered points to suddenly bring themselves to within one.
- Williams and Miller were responsible for half of that run with three kills put together, although UGA would counter with a 6-0 sprint of their own which returned the game to a seven-point situation.
- All told, Georgia outscored the Blue Hose 11-6 after seeing their lead whittled down to one.
SET THREE – GEORGIA def. PC, 25-15
- The Bulldogs pulled away in the last chapter to complete the sweep, only ahead by a 10-7 clip in the early going but eventually morphing that advantage into 18-11 and 22-14.
- Presbyterian would muster back-to-back points on just two occasions in the final set, finishing a substantial performance despite the outcome.
NOTABLES
- Miller and Williams totaled 18 kills between the two of them at nine apiece. PC out-gunned UGA in the blocks department (10-8), led by three from
Elyse Hutchinson in that statistic.
- Dorlouis lined up a team-best 18 digs and two aces, followed closely by
Aubrie Arnold's 14 digs.
- Hutchinson,
Julia Yurkovich, and
Ava Smith all concluded with four kills each, with the team hitting .133 overall (.189 in the third set).
UP NEXT
- FIU was also on the receiving end of a 3-0 sweep on Friday (losing at the hands of Georgia Southern), as this will be the first-ever encounter between PC and the Panthers.
- After a four-set stunner over Duke and a three-match winning streak, Florida International has now taken an L in their last three efforts (also unsuccessful versus Drake and UCF).
