The Blue Hose dropped a tight contest to Charleston Southern 77-73 on Friday night (Jan. 23) at the Templeton Center.
Both teams traded leads from one another throughout the game. There were 14 ties and 16 lead changes over the course of the contest.Ja'Cia Cunningham paced Presbyterian offensively once again, scoring 22 points. She made 6 of her 8 free throw attempts while pouring in two threes. Krystal Haddock delivered a monster performance against the Buccaneers, recording 16 points to go along with 14 rebounds.
Aminata Tal poured in 15 points for the Blue Hose. As a team, Presbyterian won the turnover battle decisively, outscoring Charleston Southern 25-4 off of turnovers. The Blue Hose forced 18 Buccaneer turnovers for the evening compared to PC's 10.
BLUE HOSE BY THE NUMBERS
Senior Ja'Cia Cunningham has been red hot offensively for the Blue Hose, averaging 16.4 points per game in her last five games. For the season, she ranks in the top 15 of the Big South in scoring at 10.9 points per game. She leads PC going into the weekend as well in field goals made (77) and in made free throws (38). Fellow senior Aminata Tal has also been hot for the Blue Hose, averaging 16.5 points per game last week. She is Presbyterian's second-leading scorer on the year, averaging 8.9 points per contest.
Junior Ore Ogunwolere powers the Blue Hose this season in both assists (52) and steals (33). She ranks ninth in the league in assists per game averaging 2.74. She also leads PC in minutes per game (28.7). Sophomore Daniella Velez is second on the team in assists (34) and steals (25).
Freshman Allie Sykes has paced Presbyterian from both the three-point line and the free throw line this year. She has poured in 26 threes coming into Wednesday.. She has also made 18 of her 20 total free throw attempts for Presbyterian.
Sophomore Krystal Haddock has been on a tear for the Blue Hose inside the paint, recording the first double-double of the season for PC against Charleston Southern (16 points, 14 rebounds). She leads the team on the glass, recording 5.2 rebounds per game. She is averaging 13.7 points per game in her last three games.
CAREER-HIGHS
Several Blue Hose players have had career-highs in conference play this year. Krystal Haddock recorded a career-high 14 rebounds on Friday night against Charleston Southern. Aminata Tal also logged a career-high five steals against the Buccaneers. In PC's 50-46 victory over Gardner-Webb on Wednesday (Jan. 21), Tal tied her career-high with nine made field goals, setting a new season-high. Ore Ogunwolere recorded a career-high eight rebounds for the Blue Hose against the Runnin' Bulldogs. She also tied her career-high in assists with six. Amani Williams logged seven rebounds for the third straight game, tying her career-high (also seven).
NEW PROGRAM RECORD
Krystal Haddock delivered a record-breaking performance in PC's game on Friday night against Charleston Southern. She grabbed a single-game program record 12 offensive rebounds against the Buccaneers, shattering the previous record of nine. For her efforts, she was named PC Student-Athlete of the Week.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
The Eagles come into Wednesday's contest on a three-game losing skid. Winthrop won its first two conference games against USC Upstate and Charleston Southern before dropping three in a row. The Eagles had the weekend off after falling to High Point last Wednesday (Jan. 21) 74-60. Amourie Porter leads the Eagles offensively, averaging 14.8 points per game. She is the second-highest scorer in the league. Mya Pierfax and Madison Ruff also average in double figures for the Eagles. As a team, Winthrop is one of the best scoring offenses in the conference, sitting in third averaging 65.4 points per game. Head coach Semeka Randall Lay is in her sixth season with the Eagles.
PRESBYTERIAN – WINTHROP ALL-TIME SERIES
Winthrop holds a 27-17 advantage in the all-time series with the Blue Hose. The Eagles won both matchups last season, including an overtime 67-58 victory in Clinton. Prior to last season, PC had won 7 out of the last 9 meetings with Winthrop.
BLUE HOSE ROSTER
Joining the Blue Hose this season are nine newcomers (four transfers and five freshmen). The transfers for Coach Sardin are Ore Ogunwolere (Union College), Ja'Cia Cunningham (Chicago State), and Krystal Haddock (Tennessee State).
Freshmen Aretha Linger, Yolanda Floyd, Allie Sykes, Samantha Mullock, and Amani Williams also join the Blue Hose. This is the most freshmen the Blue Hose have had on the roster since the 2022-23 season (also five).
The Blue Hose also return four from last year's roster. Seniors Shelby Fiddler and Aminata Tal lead the returners for PC. Sophomores Morgan Boyd and Daniella Velez also are back for the Blue Hose this season.
